1-800-FLOWERS.COM Launches .mobi site, Demonstrating Leadership in U.S. Retail Industry...

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/07-05-2007/0004620411&EDATE=

The site is 1800flowers.mobi

.

And actually, there were a couple of corporate buyers that actually came to the auction, uhm, they didn’t actually win the domain names they came out to get but at least they showed up. 1-800Flowers was there, for instance, and they were bidding on Flowers.mobi and they wanted that name bad; so bad enough that they made the trip down, they bought the one day pass, they wanted to be there and they thought that they were going to get it. No one knew, obviously, that that domain name would sell for $200,000; they stopped their bidding at forty. [laughs]

Well shoot they finished theirs before me!!!

Stupid yahoo dosn't support .mobi so I am trying to figure out how to pull this one off.

mlou any advice????

Nope, not yet...I'm just starting to learn about shopping carts...
It's my understanding Go Daddy has one for about 9.99 per month.

Of course Google supports .mobi, so maybe it's time for a Google website.

Want some fun... Test your pages for mobile-readiness.

Ryan, can we buy .mobi domain names thru you...if so all FlowerCaht members should buy THEIR name with the mobi extension.

Not Ryan, but YES you can...already got mine ;)

sorry for the stupid question but what is .mobi?

mobi is the internet extension used for cell phones...

The mobile phone text entry interfaces, requiring ten keystrokes in many common setups, compared to seven for "com". (Some cell phone manufactures use "wap") This is why I posted the mobile-readiness link for you to test your web site.

If the cell phone is using "Opera Mobile" as the browser, it still has to download the whole page (including images), then tailor the website to small display. Remember these consumers are paying a high price for internet use...and it is expensive to use a website that is not optimized for mobile phones. For this reason...the big players (1-800-flowers) are all developing a mobi website so they won't lose that internet consumer.

Some food for thought... USA figures
There are more than 200 million people now using mobile phones each day...

55 million of them under age 20 (your consumer of tomorrow)...

"Mobile phone marketing is a "pull" medium, as opposed to a "push" medium, in that it can pull a call to action and create a dialog...unlike radio or TV, which is one way that tries to push you into an action,"

"Right now, this reminds me of when the Internet was just ready to take off"...maybe it's time to think seriously about this, so local florists aren't the last to join like they were with the internet.

.

.mobi is meant to be more than just marketing--it's about mobile commerce. More and more phones are enabled with web browsing capabilities, and can make purchases online.

mlou--don't waste your time with a Google site. Get a site meant for florists, like Media99 or Ryan.

Yes, you can buy .mobi domains through RKF. :)

Mobile search is a hot topic - and closely alligned with Local. Interesting article yesterday about using mobile to search for a florist in Boston and getting ads for TF.com and an OG (Perry's/Flowers Across America/etc...) whose domain name showed up as googlepages.com.

The author speculates about the googlepages ad:
Notice the ad with the URL that appears to be Google-hosted? I wonder if that’s one of the mobile landing pages that Google states that they may "adapt" for users who click through? This seems particularly odd to me, and it looks like the sort of thing where Google ought to spell out under what circumstances they’ll choose to automatically generate a landing page to "enhance" the user-experience. This seems very controversial to me, because Google is likely charging advertisers when they click through to those generated landing pages, and advertisers may not realize this, causing them to misinterpret effectiveness of apparent conversion rates.
He's concerned about the advertisers. I'm concerned about the users.

My shop site is far too graphic intensive for mobile search. I understand some companies are having problems with duplicate content after building mobile-specific sites, too.

Here's 1-800's site for mobile browsing: http://www.1800flowers.mobi Definitely low tech. Looks like a typical site from 1993. ;)

Do we go ahead and create a small, fleet-footed site for mobile or hope the more robust phones will be able to surf like desktops in the near future?

I'd highly suggest you at least secure your domain name - you never know how huge this could get. I know I did, and a couple extras.

I have a Flickr browser on my Treo, and it works well for the micro screen. I think it's very possible to have an e-commerce enabled site for simiar devices (many blackberries can surf the web, as can all Windows Mobile and iPhones).

Years ago, I registered palmflorist.com ("your neighborhood florist in the palm of your hand"), and started working on a WAP app. Support on devices at the time was lousy, so I let the domain go some time ago.

.mobi Sites

Hello All,
Just to comment on the .mobi push, this is definitely an area that is a growing market, but one this to consider is the push towards better browsing on cell phones. For example the iPhone, yes its still pretty expensive, but the people buying one are also the people more likely to even consider ordering flowers over their cell phone's Internet, and the iPhone's web browser is full featured, meaning you don't have to "dumb down" your website for a person using their iPhone. There are more and more phones moving towards this and with AT&T/Apple's success with already selling over 1 million iPhones, you can bet that all the other service providers/cell phone manufacturers are working harder than ever to top the iPhone.
Well, that's enough of my ramblings, and I'm not pushing the iPhone by any means, heck I don't even have one, just a few friends that do, but I do have an HTC PPC-6700 with Sprint, which has Internet Explorer on it that is mostly a "full featured" browser just as if you were on a computer.

Some more .Mobi stuff....

Someone is trying to get me to sign up for a .Mobi hosted solution...here's a few samples...

800Florals (not 800Flowers)

Abernook

The company can be found HERE $99.99 set up, then $69.99/mo for 100 SKU's or $99.00/mo for 10,000 SKU's...

I got that call this week too...

the functionality she showed me wasn't worth any $100 a month - not at this point in time (she showed me Phillips)

If I want something that "simple" looking I will certainly roll my own. There's mobi creator programs available free online
