The numbers are out.

Consumer Sales - Floral - Down
"1-800-FLOWERS.COM Consumer Floral: During the fiscal 2011 second quarter, revenues in this category were $82.6 million compared with $85.9 million in the prior year period."

Bloomnet - Up
"Revenues were $16.2 million, compared with $14.8 million in the prior year period, primarily reflecting increased wholesale product sales."

Gourmet and Gift Baskets - Down
"Revenues were $136.7 million, compared with $138.2 million, reflecting reduced wholesale orders from mass market customers largely offset by strong growth in 1-800-Baskets.com and Cheryl’s ecommerce channels."

Valentine's Day Holiday projection:
"“Historically, the Monday placement for the Valentine holiday has had a significant negative effect on floral sales. As a result, we anticipate that topline will be impacted."

Order Volume:

"During the fiscal second quarter, the Company attracted 653,000 new customers, of whom 79 percent, or 517,000, came to the Company through its online channels. Approximately 1.7 million customers placed orders during the quarter, of whom 61 percent were repeat customers."

Compare that to same quarter last year:
"During the fiscal second quarter, the Company attracted 656,000 new customers, of whom 78 percent, or 512,000, came to the Company through its online channels. Approximately 1.7 million customers placed orders during the quarter, of which 60 percent were repeat customers."

And the year before:
"During Q2 of fiscal 2009, 1-800-Flowers attracted approximately 1 million new customers, with 72%, or more than 715,000, coming in through online channels, the company says. Approximately 2.4 million customers placed orders during the quarter, of which 57% were repeat customers."

I'm surprised the company continues to see floral sales slide. Many local florists saw an up-tick in sales the last quarter and the numbers don't portend well for national companies as a whole. FTD's parent company won't be announcing numbers until Feb. 23 so we'll have to see if this is a trend.

Out of all the above the biggest thing in marketing to me shows, they are losing ground in the CRA (customer retention area), average normal florist is in the high 60's to low 70's.............anyone can grab a million new customers by spending a ton of money, but can you keep that customer coming back without giving them 30% discount as some do. I totally dis-agree with the Vd statement, from what I can see everyone is very happy to see VD get off the weekend calender and the people who suffer the most as the rest. because DINKS (double income no kids) don't like Sunday as a celebration night, so we and others that offer service can capitalize of that group for one, elderly is another gorup that won't do Sunday night. Monday will rock for us!! FTD is waiting till the 23rd, well you guys know why.......................spin, spin, spin

If you look only at percentages, then their repeat business is going up. If you look at 2009, their retention was only 57%. Same period last year, 60%. And now 61%. Obviously, somebody is doing something right in getting repeat business....

I think the reason that Monday VD is bad for them is because even florists who would normally fill ALL of the crap orders that come in are just too busy and end up rejecting them or even turning off their bloomnet.

As we well know, a huge percent of those orders will not even be placed until Monday morning, and another huge percent will be ordered on the week-end. Florists will have already stopped accepting "innies" because their hands are full taking care of THEIR customer base.

Thanks, Linda you're right........They are keeping their rentition by buying it. But what I want to know is what it costs them for that, for a local flower shop it's $15 - $20 a year for customer rentention, there's has to be exceedeing $50 dollars or higher. Something else, the drop-shippers can't drop ship past a friday order and we all know that the order are going to come our way late!! In sales if your volume falls, then spending of current customers must go up..............we see sales down. I don't see that at all. I'm just sayin..........

What is considered a retain customer as it pertains to length of time between orders. The percent according to them is higher but the sales were down. Could a customer who had not ordered in 23 mths be considered a retained customer?

Why yes, if the numbers look better for the shareholders....................

FedEx is doing pick-ups from ProFlowers on Sunday for Monday delivery. They may be doing the same deal for FTD and 1-800....

AFAICT, PF's delivery charge for Monday will be around $20 for 'anytime' and run around $30 for 'before noon guarantee'.

I was wondering about ProFlowers because normally they dont deliver on Mondays but according to their website they are delivering on Valentines Day so that explains that

You can be pretty sure they are. This is a huge part of their business at a holiday, and a huge money maker... cut's out the florist from the game...
