1950 - 60's Design Styles?

Having worked for a lady who opened her shop in Setember of 1951 with her husband......who worked for another florist previously ( He has since deceased ) - She was a veritable treasure trove of knowledge on ' the way things were '

A hogarth curve design was considered to be cutting edge in the fifties according to her. In the sixties, forsythia branches looped and twisted with sweetgum and parrot tulips were the rage. Croton leaves accented everything.

I still talk with her on occasion..... I am fortunate that I count ( with one exception ) all my old employers as still good friends.......I can ask her to reminisce and tell me about some of the styles, tricks, and tips that were done way back when.

Thanks! I have a couple older books, including one on the history of flower arranging, but nothing touches that era. I'd love if anyone has any suggestions on books for reference - I'd love having some "vintage" looks in my repertoire.

Plus, I think it would be good to know techniques that pre-date floral foam. Some day I'm sure it will be banned!

I don't know if they are still in existence or not, or even if they are online.....but in the Ohio area ( wish I could remember what town ) there was/is a floral school that did have books written by the principal at the time.......Bill Hixon was his name. His school was attached to his shop I think. The lady I worked for attended several of his classes and had several of his books.

The school was/is called Hixon's School of Floral Design or something close to that.

Depending on how close you are to that area....that might be a resource for you.

If you dig deep enough at Amazon.com you can sometimes find older design books, I found one listed for 1959,
Flower Design Album: Exquisite Floral Designs (Spiral-bound)

I also have an older one, somewhere.....
