Again this is purely the bad decision on the florist's part. The florist should have rejected this order and should be kicked out of 800-flowers for bad behavior.

Lori, whats going to happen to the 1800 florists when 800 decides to put the big a s s ham or the Maine lobster to be delivered by their member florists. Will substitution be allowed then. The candy that is on the site is probably not carried by too many of the members, so take the darn picture down or supply the member florists with the same product. If the member florist does not want to stock all their products, then that GREAT computer system better know who's got what.

If anyone puts a picture up of an item, my thinking is you better darn have that item.

My rant is over, thanks for listening.

Anyone can get a regular box of chocolates at any drug store. The 88 cent box of choc peanuts was a very bad choice. The picture is just a generic box of chocolates..

The real juice in that story is in the conversations about WSs vs going local direct (plus the guy that loves PF). Did you notice how many posts are telling folks how to find locals via Yahoo and Google maps and to pay attention to user reviews.

IMO this holiday success was in good measure due to shoppers rediscovering and actively seeking real local florists.

Every sales person on the phones at our store mentioned being queried numerous times about 1) whether we were 'real' or 'online' and 2) if our flowers were delivered in vases or boxes.

As consumers become more savvy about sniffing out locals, the scams of sending $.88 chocolates for $15 gourmet candy will make them resolute to find reputable B&Ms.

I think that you rae so right on this one. I have never seen so much flower press about local florists and where to find them in 25 years. I think that the tides may be beginning to turn for us and people will be choosing more wisely. Yeah us......

Bigger picture - the shoddy local florist isn't mentioned at all - just 800F.

Kind of a throwback on the beginning, when the good local florist wasn't mentioned when the flowers were terrific, just 800F.

I just love Karma.

Life may be a box of chocolates. . . . .

Anyone can get a regular box of chocolates at any drug store. The 88 cent box of choc peanuts was a very bad choice. The picture is just a generic box of chocolates..

But it may be a little tougher running down to the Drug Store on V-day and getting a life, errrr. . . . . . I mean a box of chocolates.

The picture is a lure.

Again, whats the difference between a generic box of chocolates and a generic picture of a flower arr. The customer is buying the picture, thats my point.

If someone had a picture of an orchid arr. on their website, I'd rather dought roses would do for a substitution. To me it's just another form of deception, maybe a smaller form of it, but still a problem waiting to happen.

Exactly our experience, with many of those callers explaining that they had learned via their experience or from media coverage to find a local, real florist.

Good points Cathy, I agree that consumer were actively looking for local florist and we also were asked if our flowers came arranged in a vase.
The florist really short changed 800 flowers customer. A box of drug store candy would have been better and another good source is the wholesale clubs. Lori how much does 800 charge the florist for Candy including shipping? Can 800 make it profitable for the florist to fill this item when they pay them $10.65

You know I really had to step back on this one.::BS

I don't believe this for one minute! As hard as most florist work taking this kind of short cut could only mean that the their incoming order message said candy and not a box of chocoaltes.

I can't imagine any kind of florist doing this and continue to do business like this for very long. I mean its great that 800 gets the blame but this one is a little to far fetched.

I agree Cathy. This past holiday has created great impetus for the brick and mortar florist to step ahead. Judging by the comments about the success of the day, the hard work has paid off... don't let it slide. It takes a lot of hard work to push a boulder up hill. ;)

I can't count how many people immediately said to me after answering the phone "I'm on your website".........
It was very noticable...enough that I'm truly going to have to get my own site up and running with my pics. I have found that the e-commerce doesn't really matter to most. It is the pictures and discussion of the flowers used.
Now I just have to learn to take better pictures !!
