or..Advent Wreath...in the US? Is it a tradition in the US to have/make/sell lots of Advent Wreaths? Not in the UK but in Germany...

If you have a market/tradition for it in the US ..are most of them store bought? Or made at home with the kids ( as in Germany...all that quality time with kids and family..)....what are the favourites
A) artificial material
B) natural textures
C) exotics such as protea wreaths

Please send lots of photos if you have....(incl. approx. prices) .love to know what you do in the States...as in our 6 years in San Jose, California I saw the most SECTACULAR Christmas Trees in my entire Life ...and I have been around the globe!

Thanks!

I used to make an Advent Wreath for one of the Lutheran churches in the city every Christmas. All fresh greens, ribbons and of course candles. It was huge and heavy but they were always happy with it.

Advent wreaths in the US can take 2 forms:
1. The in church ones (very large -- aften spanning 36" to 48"+. or
2. the in-home kind that are made by families.

The In-church kind are usuall mixed evergreens, noble fir, with cones, etc. sometimes with cones and ribbons. and with the large candles in the correct colors for the advent sundays.

The in-home kind are usually made by the families in a church related workshop. Again , the wreath materials are often fresh pine, cones, decorations, and the 4 advent candles are fixed (or sometimes stood inside the ring of the wreath in glass cnadlesticks). This is a "family" time project, with all the family & kids adding things to the wreaths, and learning about the meaning of Advent.

Most of ours in Western pennsylvania are fairly simple. Mostly selling premade evergreen wreaths of mixed greens. The families take care of the decorating.

Hope this helps!

Cheryl

Sounds similar to ......

in Germany it is very much tradition to have an AW in your home as a table display or even hanging from the ceiling...size approx 40cm in diameter.
They come in all sorts of colours and foliages ...with candles in gold, silver, green, pink etc....and decorations of mostly spruce with cinnamon sticks, orange slices, rose hips, gold sprayed cones, all kinds of beautiful ribbons....
endless variations!

Very often it is a tradition to MAKE the wreath together with your family and children (small children) - from scratch..sort of Kindergarten age you learn how to bind a wreath with wires etc.
And then the important bit is the actual observation of Advent...even non religious people sit down on each Advent Sunday, light the candle(s), play advent (Xmas) music, drink mulled wine and eat ginger bread and Xmas cookies...

And advent wreaths are sold by almost everybody...florists, supermarkets, DIY stores..fresh and artificial....so much about that....

memories of Advent wreath

We have one in our church with just Christmas greens and the four candles.

I remember making one with my family for years. When I was in eighth grade one of the nuns taught us how to make them out of green plastic bags cut in strips and tied on a wire ring. Picture plastic bag "greens" with real candles burning... and I thought the nuns liked us kids! ... last year we had one at our home! I wonder why!

I seem to recall a show a number of years ago where an advent wreath was done, but it went back to the historical colors of all blue rather than the purple and pink. It was done for an AIFD southern symposium - was held in Charlotte, NC I believe.
