I thought a few of you, especially AIFDers, might find this a little interesting.

Thursday night, I was hired to play the piano for the Dallas/Ft. Worth ASID Christmas Party in Ft. Worth. I cannot wait to see what all those designers will do to decorate for THEIR party. It will be interesting to see if they use flowers or just how they think.

ASID (American Institue of Interior Designers) is the organization that AIFD was copied from, except we deal with flowers and they deal with interior design.

I will keep you posted if anything interesting turns up.

I'm a former member of ASID. They have pretty stringent criteria before accepting a designer in as a member, so you will probably be in a room filled with the "movers and shakers" of the interior design world in that area. (And a whole lot of ego........)

They were also instrumental in getting legislation for licensing of interior designers, so many of the older members will empathize with florists' quest for licensing.

Should be an interesting evening......

Thank you for your reply on this. I am curious about the type of people I will run into. I suspect the ego is similar to AIFD ego.

I hope I get the chance to pick their brains about a few things that we have in common.

Carol, you play the piano professionally too? You are amazing, absolutely awesomely amazing.

Connie - You didn't know!? God gifted Carol in so many ways! I have heard her.. she is very good - just as good on the piano as with flowers!

Actually, my instrument where I have the most training is the pipe organ. The piano is a sideline.

There are so many talents that I do not have, so, I have to capitalize on the few I do.

Being a musician has opened tremendous doors for me throughout the years. It has gotten me into venues with my flowers that might never have happened. My point to this is.....if you have a talent other than flowers, please use it to help make your dreams come true. A good cook can really open doors, great photographer, being a good listner etc.

Oh, I forgot, I twirl the baton, too. (lol)

Now Carol - That IS some funny shiate! I wanna see some baton twirling!! - From a fellow Baton Twirler... It's funny you mention this - was at a Christmas party on Sat. of a long time friend and yet another fellow Twirler.. we broke out the Fringed Hooped batons! and unfortunatly got pics...

I LOVE baton twirling music!

Other talents - Talking? Does that count? What about eating? I love that.... umm Yep.. that's about all I got!

Oh wait.. I can water ski - really well -

Yes, Tammie, talking is a talent. That was a super hard one for me to come by and I still work at it.

About the baton twirling.....several years ago, I did a flower show in St. Louis. The manager of the wholesale house was a very good friend of mine (so I thought). She said she knew enough about me to write my bio for the program and not to worry about it.

She ended it with this statement: Carol Bice is not only a renown baton twirler, but, has been voted the best dressed florist for 3 consecutive years. I could have just died when I finally saw it.

Funny thing is that there were some florists on the front row that kept pointing at me and when I asked them why, they said they were just so impressed to have met the winner of that award for so many years.
(Now those were dumb florists, but, sure gave me a reason to laugh)

Oh Lord - speaking of talking.......I worked with a young lady, I swear to you, from the time she came in to work till she left - she NEVER, EVER, EVER stopped talking.....unless one or the other of us simply told her to 'shut the 'ell up for a little while, give our ears a rest"

If talking is a talent, then this girl went back three times to get more talking talent.

Well - sometimes I know when to shut up... and others.. Not so much... like this one time..

(I talk a lot!) Buddy (God love him) got so mad at me one day.. I guess I was having one of those TALENTED days.. and his ears needed a rest - I thought his head was gonna explode! All I could do was laugh - I think that made him even more mad!

If any of you (other than CB) know Buddy - He is a mess! So you can appreciate the humor I found in this...

I don't remember that exact time, but, there is no doubt that you are not exacerating. He would not have a lot of patience with someone talking nonstop. But, you are still one of his favorite past employees.

I think Shantell and I had something really important to talk about that day.. Not sure what...

I think that I learned to shut the lips when he walked in... I was one of his favs... because I gave him a run for his money - the fact that I could deisgn & upsale were just added perks!

Besides - How could he ever forget the designer that had to leave during Valentines Day because her kid had stuck a bean up his nose at day care???

I bet he has mellowed out over the years! I know I have!
