Just wondering if anyone has allergy issues, and how you deal with them at the shop? Anything you absolutely avoid? Mine are out of control. If one more person says to me "you're going to have to quit the flower shop" it's going to put me over the edge. I go to see an allergist on Wednesday. This is long overdue. I know I should have went sooner. Any tips?

I suffer from late summer allergys and evergreen allergies. So I die from now until January. I try not to keep, poms, mums, solidago, queen anne's lace, asters or any of these weedy flowers out in the shop. They bother me more when they get warm. At christmas there is no avoiding the allergies. I just take lots of allergy non drowsy stuff and shuffle through the holiday...Good Luck and don't listen to them you will not have to quit the flower shop, if you are that bad they will give you shots..Have fun with the scratch test...

I am sure I headed for shots. Memories of the scratch test as a child may have made me put off going for a while. I am sure they have gotten better. (HA HA) Do ou have problems with leaf shine, or glitter spray? Myrtle?

I hate to say it....but DRUGS.....(and not the Bloomz stuff..just kidding).

I get eye infections from leaf shine and glitter spray, not sure that it is an allergy but pretty nasty anyway....No problems with myrtle...

I have a spray from the Doctor which is supposed to unblock my nose - all flowers do it to me but Lilies are the worst.
The spray is vile and doesn't actually give any relief. So as I come from Liverpool where we all sound nasal anyway ( remember how the Beatles sounded?) I have decided to put up with the blocked nose. I can take tablets when it becomes a headache but that is not too often. It all clears within a few hours of leaving the shop.
It's the price you pay for doing the best job in the world.

Allergeries

I have developed very severe asthma. The doctors told me that I had to quit doing flowers and if I did go ahead....be sure to wear a mask. Any of you that know me, also know that I would never wear a mask at work. I did think about coming up with something clever in a mask, but, they only seemed to work for Halloween.

Anyway, they got me on some good drugs that seem to do the trick. Eucalyptus and evergreens still bother me when I cut into them. I agree that the answer is drugs.....not over the counter, but prescription drugs.

When all testing was done.....it came out that I have a huge allergy to cigarette smoke and can go into shock if anyone lights up around me.

But, I do understand what you mean when someone tells you to get out of the flower business. I went through several agonizing months before we got it taken care of. Find a really good doctor and go from there. Don't put up with trying to find over the counter answers by yourself.

Carol, what do you avoid in your shop with the asthma? Thanks for the response you answer gives me some hope. My over the counter patchwork of meds has reached it's limits. I am supposed to be seeing one of the best allergists around. The 24 hr clinic couldn't help me the other day, said I had taken enough already and may have allergy induced asthma. I won't be quitting, but I would like not feel lousy or doped up.

Question?

As someone who has several major medical problem, where are you bying your flowers from, when we quite bying stuff from CA we quite having problem,s all the darn pestisides, check the leaves of the rose's are they dusty looking, kinda of gray looking, , If so send them back, also are the flowers coming in with roots on them, send them back, also alstro is a biggy on here we never have that in the store,,,Question your flowers, and where they are coming , growing, and that will help you major. Feel better.

I have suffered from allergies ever since I can remember. My worst seasons are fall and spring. But I do have them all year round. Mostly I just suck it up and deal with it. Alot of nose blowing!!

I have noticed that whenever I process a new shipment of flowers my arms break out in a rash that is very itchy and last a few hours.

At xmas time I am always stuffed, my eyes are red and sore, I get rashes on my arms and hands. It is all the winter greenery. I HATE the stuff!!! (I am a redhead with VERY VERY sentisive skin.)

Good luck at the allergy Dr. (I probley should also make an appointment.)

In our gourmet section of the store we stock local honey. Our customers with allergies swear by it. We sell ALOT of local honey for people with allergies. They take a spoonful or more daily.

I swear by local honey. Put 2 tsp in a cup of hot decaf tea every night during my "bad" allergy season (spring and fall) I have not taken any prescription allergy medicine in over a year!! It really does work. It is the same concept as vacinations and/or allergy shots (which I had once a month for 3 years when I was in my early 20's). Your body builds up a tollerance to the allergens.

Christmas greens really get to me in December but honey won't help me with that because it comes in from out of state.

I have to take prescription meds, during the summer and during the fall. something about that wonderful Alabama weather change!!! Gets my allergies wound up. Also when we use alot of Solidago, it really messes up my allergies!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Went to the Dr. today, and am starting the road to recovery today, and shots start next week. He was very kind and we are going work on a manageble plan for me and he didn't once say get out of the flower business. ( the ideal thing of course) If you are dealing with allergies that are affecting your daily life, and you are relying on only over the counter meds., go see your Dr., there is hope.

About 8 years ago, my Dr. had me try a new drug called Singulair. Ever since, I have told everyone that it has been life-changing. I was diagnosed with asthma at 2yrs. and never outgrew it. I have been hospitalized for it and had emergency treatments for it many times (whenever I would catch cold). I have been medicated for it since age 10.

When I was 10, I started the allergy shots daily and ended with every three weeks at age 15. They had a residual effect for several years after. Allergies are one of the triggers for my asthma and I am allergic to many things. Conifers, for example - we have one or two in Oregon. Mold seems to like the rainy climate of the Willamette Valley and grass pollen is abundant here also.

So, treatment for my asthma has centered around my year-round allergies. I have tried most, if not all, counter and prescription allergy meds over the last 20 years with moderate success. Since I've been on Singulair, I can even step outside in 20 deg. temp and not have to use my inhaler. I do still take an additional allergy med during the grass (ornamental lawn) harvest, though.

So, if you have allergies, you might talk to your doctor about Singulair. Apparently, it does not work for everybody (like all allergy meds). If it does work for you, though, it is worth the expense.

Here is the Merck website for Singulair:
