I've been writing about the retail floral business for 10 years. My colleagues and readers referred me to it. I can learn from real conservations of my readers and use these chats as fodder for story ideas and sources.
I for one, and maybe for many, feel that SAF is pretty much in the pockets of the Wire Services. And if that is so, and you write a story from what you glean on FC, it may not see the printed page.
Florists in general terms make decisions that are not based on business or ethics. I.E. Why are Order Gatherers allowed to be members of the wire services? Most florists do not have a clue.
Sending only wire service members just does not make any sense and has probably burned a lot of consumers when buying flowers and unknowingly get involved with an Order Gatherer.
I believe the "sending only membership class" started out in the era of WWII when they were located on military bases. That category of membership has no valuable benefit to the flower consumer or filling florist today. It benefits the wire services and order gatherers only and at the expense of the consumer and the filling florist.
So try to do a story on that aspect of the retail side of floristry for SAF and see how far you get. Let me know, if you can.

From the age of 76, I have just about seen it all unfold, and it is sad. We are in the era of fast change and somethings get lost. My mother used to order her groceries by phone and the grocer delivered them for a quarter and offered to put the heavy items in the fridge.
We used to hear "number please" when we wanted to make a phone call, now we press a bunch of keys. I liked the old way much better.
