Over the past few days we have received orders from overseas via Mercury referring to our "legal holiday" on June 24th. It apparently impacted delivery times etc. I have looked in the Int. Dir. and lo and behold we have a "legal holiday" where "shops are closed all day", on the 24th of June...and of course there is the all important "Orangements Day" on July 12, National Heritage Day on August 4th, National Day of Mourning on April 28th...Micmac Festival of St. Anne on July 30th, Commonwealth Day on March 9th, New Years Eve...St. Patricks Day...

Here , add St. john's day June 24 , Regatta day 1st Wedneaday in August weather depending, all those are old English holidays which were held in Government and banking circles up to a few years ago when the Feds made it only 6 paid holidays, the provinces still have some others but not all are paid . Seems since most of the businesses are now controlled outside of Newfoundland they won't pay for the 18 statutory holidays that were commonplace here.

But how many of us are closed on those days? It's the first time I've ever seen this...doesn't make sense to me. The people overseas only go by what the book says. Orders can be lost because of incorrect info. I've lived in B.C., Alberta and Ontario...none of those "holidays" ever existed for me...St. Paddy's day for heaven sake. FTD should tell Guiness...so they can stop their campaign to make it a holiday...it apparently already is! :beer

We'll be open on July 1, as it's not a hoilday in the United States, and we've found if it's a hoilday in Canada, quite often we're busier with helping shops in the United States.

i AGREE WITH Victoria,
I think they should list legalize holidays that most shop would be close llike
Jan, 1
Easter,
July 1,
Labor Day
Canadian thanksgiving,
Christmas & Boxing Day.
Those holidays are the norm that most shops are closed for business.

Ditto: We close for the main stat holidays - civic holiday too (August 1) as you could fire a cannon down our main street and not hit anything.

believe it or not George it's to commemorate the day when the rich people in England took pity on their servants and gave them gifts and then served them for the day, notice it takes place the day after christmas .

I AM NOT SURE WHY BOXING DAY IS A HOLIDAY IN CANADA (DEC.26) BUT I WILL TAKE IT ANYTIME TO RELAX.
MAYBE US CANADIAN KNOW WHEN TO CLOSE FOR A EXTRA HOLIDAY.

Peter...working hard is commendable...even laudable by spells...however, it would be a shame to see "Here Lies Peter...He worked 365 Days a Year" on your marker....much to much life to enjoy outside of work. Take a minute...:)

When you happen to be lucky enough to love what you do, working 365 days/year should not be considered a strenuous life style,
I take vacations, but I take my laptop with me. :)

It's always better to leave something good behind.

"here lays a guy who worked 365 days a year, and had a whole buncha friends that THOUGHT they could!!"
Take a break Peter...workin on my house, and probably soon gotta start workin on my cottage ( er , what's left of it!!)
