:hammer:When I started out years ago when I was a teen I would skip to the flower shop and work with an older lady and she taught me wonderful things about flowers and how to put them together. But now that I am older and I see all new to assembly I wonder if I should get more updated. I still wire and tape everything, now there is glue pots and a whole new way to think. Am I still old school and do I need to rethink everything. I worry about corsages falling apart and wedding bouquets falling apart if they are not wired and taped. What do you think?

Evolving

Your foundation is old school, as mine is. When we learn new things we must put that knowledge to use. It is an evolutionary process. Our skills evolve from the rudimentary. You have the foundation and you must expand and build upon it. At one point I found myself saying "I'll NEVER glue a corsage. I'll always wire roses." These habits have all gone by the wayside for me...there are exception though.
There is a wealth of new product out there for the floral designer to use and experiment with. I learn something new everyday and look forward to each day and what I will discover new.
Read the trade magazines and go to every design show possible. And most importantly, keep an open mind!

I've had to reinvent myself as a designer twice in the last 3 years, and expand upon what I learned 10+ years ago. Since I was joining shops with good designers already in residence, I gleaned a lot from the styles and techniques they were using that were good and tried to update myself after being out of the floral industry for awhile. I've never wired a bridal bouquet and never seen it done, that is really old school, now many people are doing hand ties, we still mostly use bouquet holders.

I used to belong to a shop that went to many design shows, my present employers don't do that so much so I rely on the internet alot. I have found so many pictures of amazing designs and that has helped me to think outside the box and improve my creativity. I am fortunate to have worked at shops that applauded creative designs and try not to inhibit designers.

Since I found this board not too long ago, I've learned things about handling flowers like hydrangea and roses, etc. plus different design techniques. The thread on this board where everyone shares their fave web sites is great, also the pictures they have posted of their own designs. The other gal I work with is very old school and is slow to change or pick up new styles so I'm not sure if you are like minded. Maybe incorporating a new thing in a small way here and there might be your style rather than hitting it full force like me.

The best part of being human is being able to learn from others. I too have a strong base "old" school if you like. However, I'm always on the lookout for new ways to do things.

Sometimes the new ways don't cut it for me so I stick with what I know, but more often than not... I love the new techniques!

If we didn't evolve we'd still be driving Edsels. ;)

Yes to all of the above! I attend every trade show and design show that I possibly can. I have completed all of the floral design classes at all 3 of the closest community colleges. Yes, I took that beginner class with the roundy-moundy arrangement 3+ times, and I learned something new each time. I read floral design and architectural (home decor, etc) magazines. You can never learn enough because you cannot know everything. Go for it!

There will still be occasions when you will need your "old school" methods.
