OK...so tell me if my parents were kidding me:

My mother was born and raised in London, came to NYC and met my father who was a young sailor. They met at a bar. My mother told my father "why don't you knock me up some time"? My father thought it was kind of forward, but what the ??? So my mum tells me to the Brits, "knock me up" means "call me" and of course we Yanks know what it means here! At any rate, they had 3 children...so he definitely called her!

They weren't kidding you Dianne. My mother was from Ireland... she asked the night clerk at the hotel in Toronto to "knock her up", at seven. She was embarrassed to tears apparently when she learned what the expression meant in Canada.
