Every now and again I come across the same sayings and i have no idea what they mean, i am sure that there are other brits who have the same problem so i wondered if you would be good enough to tell me, two to start with are:-

pay it forward

open house
???

Thank you so much, i could contribute a little more armed with this knowledge, also if i come out with any stuff that you dont understand please ask as i would hate for people not to know what i was talking about. Although i suspect this is not because of any sayings lol

Pay it Forward was a wonderful movie from a few years ago. The premise was to pass a kindness from person to person... hence pay it forward (a positive response to paybacks).

Open house is simply that... we open our homes to invited guests for a party (Christmas in particular). The idea is the guests drop in have a drink and a treat, a bit of conversation and leave. In the business world, many shops in North America will have open houses to promote their Holiday products.

Palms I just love reading your posts!! It is so funny how we all take our slang for granted.

My mom is from Italy and it is always hysterical that still, to this day, she doesn't understand American slang. My sister and I are always explaning jokes to her, etc.

I personally love British and Australian films and shows. I love the way the people talk. Sometimes I have to rewind and repeat to get their slang too!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Muriel's Wedding, Imagine Me and You, and Torchwood. Oh I am so glad that we have the BBC America channel here!

aw thanks you guys (leans head to one side and looks cute).

Thanks for the explanation Victoria, i had a feeling open house was just that but wondered how it would work. I had no idea about the pay it forward and now a lot of posts make sense.

Connie i am glad you like my new signature, got to admit i was chuckling to myself when i put it on. And Flowerchatter, i love the american and Canadian way of things too, I love that I dont understand some things. I am far too nosey to let things go though ....

Never nosey... rather a thirst for information. That's never a bad thing. :)

Love your new signature!

If I may - opinions vary - it was a wonderful movie and premise - up until the end which turned it into a suckass movie.

I still can't imagine why they chose to end such a beautiful movie so utterly horribly.

I think movie makers that do this to us need to be drawn and quartered.

On that note - anyone bother to watch No Country for Old Men?

Another suckass ending, from a different perspective. When there's a monster of that stature - I really want him to get got in the end.

Sorry for the side trip - carry on

and oh yeah - do Pay It Forward.

Paula, I have one. Someone said "skint" in a post, what does that mean?

Well, being from the south, the term "skint" actually means "skinned" as in "I done shot me a big 'ol buck and skint it yesterday."

Robin, like geebf says, skint over here is having no money. I can see this thread seeing quite a few sayings...
