:ssmoke I have just come back from Amsterdam where i went for a very short break. I must say i was so shocked to see the red light district, was totally not what i expected and to be honest i felt really uncomfortable.

Anyone else been and what did you think??

It used to be OK ... i.e acceptable for ladies to walk through becasue it was all quite discreet and just the windows to watch. Last time I went (November 08) it was sick, seedy and the banana club was considered too gruesome to even stand outside, never mind enter.

How was the rest of your trip

Well unfortunately it was not flower related as we just took the boat over and had the day there. But as far as girly trips go it was really good fun and a good laugh. I would recommend a p and o ferry cruise from hull most definately.

The red light district is lots of windows on the front of the street with prostitues with underwear on trying to get men in. When the men go in the curtains close.... i will leave the rest to your imagination.

I found it really seedy and just felt uncomfortable with it all. Another reminder of the privelidged (sp) life we have.

Next time I go it will be flower related most certainly.

sounds like bananas are going places where bananas shouldn't go...Am I right??

There's a real good, uncensored documentary about Amsterdam called "Sex, Drugs and Democracy". It's worth a look.

Most of it is on YouTube, here's part 1

I was just there in February, and I didn't think it was nearly as racy as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it was WAY CRAZY, but I thought it would be worse.

I was the most struck by how small their little rooms were...they were more like entry halls with windows. I can't figure out how they do anything in those little phone booths. What was even more odd, was that there were all these red light windows and above them was a couture wedding salon, or a super high end hair salon.

We went to a little pub near there, it was pretty tame, just a regular pub.

I did love the city though. The people were so healthy and glowing...they just had an ora about them. There was this calmness and ease in everyone I met there.

I had one short visit....uuumm..lets see 20ish years ago! OMG I'm old! Went for the garden tour. We did have some free time on our own in Amsterdam and it was a bit shocking and way back then.

Ofcourse I have to put my 2 cents in I'm Dutch and moved to America at age 22, I really had to smile when I read the threat I thought it was sweet, we are an very open and realistic bunch of people, and America is sorry no effence very conservative. I remember my first experience on the beach and I went toples, I was almost attact with towels because as I was told I would get arrested lol It was normal for me. Thats Europe everyone has titties there lol, but I wanted to invite you all to Camden or Atlantic City where the prostitutes work now that is scary,
I think it is very novel "de Wallen or de Rosse buurt" as we would say in Holland, It gives "Window Shopping" a whole new meaning. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of things I don't like about Holland, and I love America I just miss going Toples Ha Ha lol.

Seriously though only there for a day, i was scared if i looked, the girls would eat me for dinner..

And I you!

Oh Carrie, thanks for the much needed laugh! I would love to meet you one day!

To be honest I would like to meet all the Flower Chat people I have come to know over the last year or so. Given I look at five different forums I reckon this is the best one I have found and congratulate Ryan and the team for keeping it that way.

As a group FC seems so perky and you all try to find - wherever possible - a good in a situation even when it's bad and help each other with kindness. That is tough to achieve at the best of times ... even tougher when the economy is against us so I applaud you all and hope one day we can meet ... maybe a group outing to Amsterdam!!!!

Carrie

Being Dutch as well as Joukje, it is just one of those 'normal' things...we just kinda grew up with it, liberal, generally when I go to the airport with family we usually go early and hop on the train from Schiphol into the city, bit of shopping, a meal and have a little detour through there, day night whatever, aunts uncles cousins etc, like a family outing!!

Are you sure they were girls?!?!?! :wide:

... maybe a group outing to Amsterdam!!!!
