The 26th annual Flowers& Design Contest is here, and I'd like to invite all of you to enter! The winners receive cash ($$$) prizes and a short feature in the magazine! Everything you need to know to enter is outlined below... just send me a message if you would like an entry card and I'll mail one to you!

You do not have to be affiliated with Teleflora in any way to enter. Good luck everybody...

26th annual Flowers& design contest: Gifts from the Earth

More and more consumers are taking environmental impacts into consideration as they make all kinds of purchasing decisions. They’re voting with their wallets for products that are earth-friendly, from hybrid cars to organic coffee. And who is more likely to be concerned about the environment than someone who loves fresh flowers?
Your challenge for this year’s contest is to create a design that will appeal to that environmentally aware consumer. The appeal can be on many levels. Of course, the style of the design should reflect the fact that flowers are a product of nature. Beyond that, you may choose materials that have a special claim to low impact or pro-environmental value.

The entry card provides a blank space for you to make your own statement about why your design is earth-friendly. It should be the kind of thing you might say to a customer in promoting this design (contact me through FlowerChat if you need a free entry card).

Cash Prizes
1st Place: $1000
2nd Place: $500
3rd Place: $250
The remaining seven finalists each receive an honorable mention certificate

How to enter
Contestants must submit a photo of a design that expresses this year’s contest theme, “Gifts from the Earth.” The design must feature fresh flowers primarily. The retail price of the design must not exceed $65 (as calculated on the entry card). The design should extend no more than three feet tall or long by three feet wide or deep. Make sure the entire design is visible within the frame of the photo.

More about the photo
We suggest that you photograph your design against a plain, neutral background. Do not include props or persons in the photo. Send only one photo. Do not mount the photo, and do not write your name or address on the back. If you send us a print, make it five by seven inches. Digital photos will be accepted, but must be taken at a high resolution. Both a print and a digital file on a CD should be included with your entry. Please call us with any questions at 800-321-2654, extension 3590.

Submitting your materials
Each submission must be accompanied by a fully completed entry card. Please print clearly and include any professional affiliations such as AIFD, CAFA, etc. Photocopies of the entry form will be accepted. Failure to complete the worksheet portion automatically disqualifies the entry. Only one submission per contestant is allowed. Sorry, we are unable to acknowledge receipt of each entry. All photographs become property of Flowers& and will not be returned. Send to: Flowers& Design Contest, 11444 West Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064.

Judging
Winners will be selected through two phases of judging:
Phase 1 A preliminary screening by a panel of expert judges determines the 10 finalists. To ensure impartiality, all submissions are coded so that the judges do not know the designers’ identities. Entries are judged according to the originality, color harmony, balance, mechanics, and overall design of each arrangement as well as on how well they meet the requirements of this year’s theme, “Gifts from the Earth,” as outlined in this announcement.
Phase 2 The original photographs of the top 10 entries are featured in the August issue of Flowers&. The magazine’s readers choose the first-, second-, and third-place winners from the 10 finalists’ designs. (Once again, the designers’ identities are not revealed. However, finalists are notified of their status as such by May 30.) Each design is given a number, and Flowers& readers vote for their favorite design by number on a postage-paid ballot card that is included with the August issue. Then the winners are announced in the November issue of Flowers&. (Don't worry FlowerChatters, I'll send you the August and November issues too if you need them!)

Deadline
To qualify, entries must be postmarked by Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Good luck!

I just figured out how to e-mail a PDF of the Design Contest card, so I can e-mail it rather than snail mail it to anyone who would prefer to receive it that way.

Great idea Erlene! Thanks!

Ok, here's a PDF of the Design Entry Card (back and front). Download away, and feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks
