Just thought we would share this idea we have worked on and perfected.

Instead of spending $1,000 to $2,000 on a ribbon printer we have worked it so we can print script right off of our HP photosmart printer.

We use the hallmark card studio and #40 ribbon, we created a template and run the ribbon thru the envelope slot on the printer. IT works great !

We can have ANY color script we want, we can add ANY type of photo or art drawing , We can have any type of script style size etc...

IT looks great and what a time saver and money saver this is going to be. NO more ugly , tacky script !

How does it stand up to water, wear, bending, folding and scratching?

Can you post pictures of the printed ribbon?

Ryan

Well the ribbon reacts like #40 ribbon does when it gets to water or you crease it too much. and the only way i was able to get the ink to come off is if i ran it under water and totally soaked it. Which we all know wouldnt happen in an arrangement.

scanner is down but i could mail you a sample we made.

i will try to post a picture - will see if digital camera takes a good enough pic to post. right now - we have script samples with deer, cows, barns , angels etc..

I have a TON of pics i can put on this ribbon from the hallmark studio cd's and we could also have the persons picture printed if someone wanted to e mail me a picture. I could download and print it as well. We just have not done that as of yet.

as long as you realize....

that you'll "blow" the drum and roller set on your printer, this does work.
Your HP printer is not designed to take a material like ribbon through it's "heat set" process without a glazing effect on several moving parts!!

I was wondering about that....especially on a long scripted piece where the heat can really build up....

ok, we are using a photo printer ( hp photosmart ) and the photo paper that it is made to print on is much thicker than the thin #40 ribbon. And we run it thru the envelope slot - which also the envelopes are thicker as well. So i dont see how this ribbon would be a problem. We dont use script every day.

For now we use the hallmark card studio art images, which any art image software would work.

We will keep in mind about the printer and make sure it gets a good cleaning - you should do that anyway.

Posted are the photos of some samples

this is a very costly....

way of printing ribbon banners...the costs associated with ink jet printers is anywhere from 10 to 20 times the cost of film/laser per printed "foot" and this is not a cost effective way to print banners if you use a lot!
The ink jet cartridges are a fortune for the photosmart, and when 1/2 depleted seem to run on linear fibrous materials like ribbon!!
On the other hand, these printers are throw aways, and cheap enough to be replaced arbitrarily, and do indeed do a nice job for what it is you are doing....
interesting ribbon concepts......

Thanks Country-your samples look much better than the tacky script we are now using or worse yet the hand written/glittered ones. We only do that type of work occasionally so I'm going to see if we can press a old ready for the garage sale printer into service for a while. Would love a Fiorello printer but can't justify the cost here yet.

Cost versus New Costomers

Imagine getting $5.00 to $10.00 per banner you can sell. Imagine you the only florist in your area having this machine. Imagine the amount of banners oyu can do or offer...Like Happy Birthday Lorie, Happy 40th birthday Lorie, Or Lorie is Over the Hill. Or even Welcome Home Lorie, It's A Girl Banner, Retirement Banner, etc. etc. 200 Banners and that is paid for...
Do sample banners and post them around the store, Have some pre made ready to go, Offer these banner when family order a funeral piece....
I bet you you can justify this now....

i betcha we cant justify it - its way too expensive. And we cetainly can not afford it.

This is why we played around with the printer we already have, and trust me it works great ! So if anyone else is in my shoes and would like nicer printed script but cant afford fiorella then our idea is a nice alternative. Just make sure your printer stayes clean.

follow up - we had several funerals this past week and wanted to let everyone know that the script was a breeze and the customers LOVED being able to put a picture on the ribbon.
