I have a 5th grade math problem I can't help my daughter figure out:

Miranda visited a petting zoo. She counted 95 ducks and goats. (together). She also counted 316 legs between the ducks and goats. How many of each kind of animal did Miranda see?

I'm kind of stuck on using Algebra, but I don't think they're really doing that yet. Any other ideas? Just guess & check?

If they could use algebra, here's my equation, but I'm just too old to rememer how to solve it:

g + d = 95
2d + 4g = 316

If they could use algebra, here's my equation, but I'm just too old to rememer how to solve it:

g + d = 95
2d + 4g = 316

solve for g in the first equation...g=95-d

substitute this value for g into the second equation... 2d + 4(95-d) = 316

2d + 380 - 4d = 316

-2d = - 64

d = 32

Go back to the first equation, and plug in 32 for the value for d...g + 32 = 95, so g = 63

Therefore d =32 and g =63...and when you plug these figures into both equations, you find out this is correct.

Can't give you a green dot...so

Gold Star is coming...way to go.

(you beat me to it, I was going to post the answer)

.

Ok - I was lost after " she counted 95 Ducks and Goats" ...

well....I only have 10 fingers and toes :hammer:

Miranda is lying. You can't count the number of legs of moving animals with such a precision. She just made up the numbers just so that prestonway could get a green dot.

  1. Open internet browser of choice
  2. open google.com
  3. type in "miranda visited a petting zoo" in search box
  4. click on first result "yahoo answers"
  5. find answer instantly with formula

and yes the trains passing in St Louis Mo with one leaving New york and the other Utah were going the same speed. One just had less cars.

OMGosh I hated algebra. I have no clue where my son got his math skills (physics major, math minor at MSU) cause it wasn't from ME.

I can balance my check book tho :)s

Oh yeah those freaking train questions!!! Train A leaves St. Louis going 70 miles an hour and Train B leaves New York going 70 miles an hour. Train A has to travel over a mountain pass that has an altitude of 125 ft. to reach New York. Train B has a straight run. If they are both traveling at the same speed...... what color underwear is the conductor wearing?

THIS is why I am a floral designer!!!

My guess the color would be "Stained"

Karla,

I sincerely hope you have 20 fingers and toes. If you really only have 10, please accept my apology, and my admiration for you as a floral designer!! Wow. lol
