Today, I won the year long Bridge Marathon at the Petroleum Club in Ft. Worth for the Ft. Worth area. Made some nice prize money.

It got me to wondering, are any of you bridge players?

.

Love the game...learned to play bridge while in college many, many moons ago.

Played often as my children were growing up...but haven't played much in the last 10 years.

You don't find people or couples playing bridge as much these days, most are now playing poker...Hey, Texas Hold'em.

Carol, Congratulations!!!!

Bridge is one of those games that I thought would be interesting to learn. I see the hands and strategies in the newspapers, which lead me to think it would be interesting.

joe

besides, Ward and June used to play against the Rutherfords.... or was that Gin? ;)

Joe, I think that with your type mind, you would be an outstanding bridge player. Your mind and they way you use numbers probably would make you a winner. Mlou is probably the same type of person and I can see her playing competitive bridge.

I do believe it may become a lost art. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are going into schools and trying to spark the interest of the younger people because they think it does help them to think deeper and keeps their minds sharper. They feel like it stimulates cognitive thinking.

I think they drank gin. ;)

Carol, congratulations on that achievement.

They tried to teach bridge to me years ago... operative word being "tried". It didn't stick.

I *thought* about learning to play bridge. I love cards: Rummy, Hearts, Spades and used to play Screw Your Buddy, Euchre and I-always-want-to-say "Castanet" but I know it isn't that....anybody know what I'm talking about? Help!

CANASTA - That's it! I answered my own question. BTW: Congrats, Carol, I'd love to learn Bridge so if you want to play online sometime let me know.....

I have played bridge a couple of times - I can't really remember how that went!?

Carol, You look like a bridge player! And a winning bridge player at that! That is very cool! So is dinner on you tonight?

Canasta, love the game... used to play Canasta with my grandmother and her friends. I don't know anyone that plays Canasta now.

Congratulations, Carol! That's quite an accomplishment.

After learning to play bridge in college, and playing a lot when I should have been studying, I played every chance that I could for several years, but haven't played in for a while now. It's a wonderful game!

Dorothy, since you like cards, you probably would like bridge. My recommendation is that you take a class. That is the very best way to learn correctly. It is fun from the beginning, but, every single time you play, there is some new angle to learn. It is a lifelong process.

I am into competitive playing and would not be a good person for a beginner to play with....but, I do recommend that you go on a beginner site and do just that. It will greatly improve your game and it is great fun. Let me know if you follow through with this. I am interested.

Dern, I prefer learning from the experts, but I have heard it's a lifelong thing, so maybe I'll look into it. Thanks Carol.

There are several canasta groups in my area. I haven't played it for numerous years because after you learn bridge....the other games are not as much fun. Bridge is a combination of many games put together. I really don't know anybody that has learned bridge that plays canasta anymore.

I do remember it being a fun game when I first learned.

When we used to go to the Top 100 meetings, there were several bridge players among them. That was always a good networking situation.

When you take classes, you do learn from the experts. They have to have passed rigerous testing to qualify to teach the game. These people really hone their teaching skills. I think it is not a good idea to just learn from your friends....I did and had to completely relearn the game years later.

In fact, tonight, I am taking an advanced class in Arlington at the Bridge Center with a professional teacher.

I have heard psychiatrists say that people who work crossword puzzles or play bridge have better working brains as they get older. I sure want to look brainy when I am laying in bed at The Retirement Home.lol
