Since I recieved my AIFD manual, I've had an idea floating around in the back of my brain. Now that summer is here, would anybody be interested in participating in a non-competitive design excercise?

Here is the premise : We decide on one design category at a time, such as "Do a Hogarth Curve".

Anybody who wants to can post a design. Anybody who wants to evaluate can. This would not have to be a formal evaluation, it could be as brief as "I don't like it". The caveat being that there has to be some sort of explanation to support the opinion. This way, anybody can post, even if they are not designers.

What do you think?

In preparation for Kansas City symposium last year, we had this type of thing going.......people who were interested in trying out would submit photos of regular designs, party work, corsages, etc. and a group of us AIFD members as well as others would comment on it.

In commenting though........bear in mind...a picture is not a three dimensional image. There may be mistakes in the real design that we cannot see. A picture that 'looks' like a passing design, may in reality be one that would not pass the PFDE.

Keeping that in your minds......I'd be glad to comment on your designs.

That would be great, Ricky! The idea came to me because in the book, there were a few styles that I had never even HEARD of, let alone tried. I want to try them, but I of course would not have any idea whether or not I had executed them correctly. That should be easy enough for you pros to spot, even if you can't tell about mechanics and other details.

Thanks!
Linda

Paula - Just post a picture of designs you do.....whether they be specialty events, daily work, sympathy, birthday, whatever......and I, along with some other AIFD members on FC will look at the picture and offer you our honest critiques and suggestion in how you might make the design more creative, or have more 'pop', or maybe a more unique color combination, or just whatever.
Linda, Concord and whoever else wants too......Go right ahead and post all the pictures.

Well, We can do this one of two ways..........I can ask Ryan, Cathy, or one of the other mods to 'sticky' this thread or a new thread so it stays at the top of the listing, or we can create a seperate sub-user group and keep things there.

I would prefer the 'stickied' option as with the other option, you have to 'join' the group in order to post.

If we did a new thread to keep everything in........I would title the thread: AIFD, Here We Come

The reasoning for AIFD and not Boston.....is that Boston symposium is here in just a couple weeks.......so, that would let this thread continue toward the following symposium in San Francisco.

Thanks, Ricky, I like the more open option, as I would like to participate, but may not make every week/design or however it's configured. Loose is good for me, and just want to hone my skills. Love that we have top notch people here sharing their expertise.

ok.....then I'll create a new thread - in the DESIGN subforum - titled "AIFD, HERE WE COME " . I'll send a pm to Ryan, Cathy, Boss, and Mikey asking one of them to 'sticky' the thread so that it stays at the top of the thread listings.

OB1 is a member of AIFD, I am a member of AIFD, Would love to have some other members hop on board and then everybody start posting your pictures.

( I will add a disclaimer to the thread as well - Looking at a two dimensional picture is NOT the same as seeing the design there in front of you. A design that looks like it may be a passing design may in reality not be one.......vice versa.....a design that looks like a poor design in the picture may in fact be a great design viewed in reality. )

Thread made and stickied ( Thanks Guys ) - So ....... LET THE PICTURE POSTING COMMENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure your foam is a higher above the lip of the container than it would normally be.....and use a taller vase so you can get a nice drape. - Now, there is nothing that says that a hogarth curve design can't be done horizontally......for a table centerpeice perhaps.....so you might want to try it that way. Just let your imagination go with it Paula.

Thanks for setting this up Ricky. It is a great way for AIFD wannabes to hone their skills. I will help in any way I can. I love to see people that work hard succeed.

I with you Carol.....In fact, I would be hard pressed to say which I enjoyed more..........me going across that stage to get my pin or seeing someone that I helped, encouraged, and mentored go across and get that pin.
