I was actually inspired by a post that was made by someone earlier this year. I cannot find it as there are so many posts, and I wish I would have flagged it somehow. Anyway, I am doing a Make Someone's Day for $20 promo with a 4 1/2 inch blooming plant that we are potting in a 79-cent Menard's clay pot with a little ribbon tail and some spanish moss. My cost will be about $7 with a little labor thrown in at maybe 10 minutes. I am doing a 2X markup in hopes to inspire people to buy when they have no good reason to do so. Plus, if they have it delivered, we will make money on that part.
I only have about 20 plants coming in, so if I clear them all out, I will make a $200 contribution to my fixed costs. We will advertise them on Thursday, and I can reorder on Monday if it looks like it is working. My thought process is this...people will part with a $20 bill in theory for some expense they hadn't planned...but it is too low of a price point to send something to someone for a "real occasion" such as a wife's birthday where she should be getting a more expensive gift. So, what we should gain, if it works, is an additional sale that I wouldn't have had before. And, if it doesn't work, I can combine some plants into a blooming plant garden and sell at a higher price point for a traditional occasion like a birthday or a funeral.
Trying to get out of my box here and promote when there is little business so that I earn new and hopefully repeat clients for Mother's Day and beyond.
