Mindy, there are a series of questions in the new member intos that should be answered.
Do you have a website?.....
Do you have formal floral education?......
What do you wish to get out of Flowerchat....
What do you think you can give to Flowerchat....
or something like that..
Add a little more info on those types of things and members will know more about you and your grandmother's shop!!

No need for the "grill" work

And I personally thank you for losing the really big font. ;)

Hi Mindy, I think this is useful info for new members - hope it helps you!welcome, again.
:)
There is also a helpful Search link at the top of every page
Search Query section
Search for Key Words;__________________________
You can us operators here such as and or +, or you can enclose the phrase in double quotations marks "search terms" to find the entire phrase.
Below that is the Advanced Search Section

Search Options section - advanced search
Select which "Forum" to search in at a time, or at all.

For example, "wire service" I would only search in the "Wire Service" section.
Many people that are new here seem to have a common theme, frustration with the wire services. Believe me, this has been discussed hundreds of times, and it's doubtful that anything new will come from further discussion of the exact same topics that has't been already beat to death, repeatedly.

That's the basic way, you can limit further by using some of the other "Drop-Down" menu's like if you know the thread you are looking for is only a week or so old, etc....

Now that you have a list of threads you've searched for, do not just click on the thread you want to read. Instead RIGHT click on the thread and select "Open in New Window" This will pop up a new window with that thread in it, leaving your searched list intact for you to go back to.

The purpose of the "Search" is to offer a member the opportunity to research his/her question better. There is so much information from past threads that you may never see because that member is no longer here, or doesn't see your new post, or just won't respond to the same question. So use it to your advantage and enjoy the board! View this funny and informative film about posting and searching?BR>http://uploads.ungrounded.net/188000/188612_Posting.swf

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the forum. At the top of every board there are threads that are tagged as "Sticky" These threads are "Sticky" because they contain very important/valuable information about the forum and everyone should read them.

Following these simple tips will help keep the board pertinent, and eliminate the large numbers of S-O-S posts that we get here on a daily basis, thereby making this board the valuable useful tool it can be.

But we don't want the valuable, golden money making info threads to be lost in the sea of chaff.....

and please don't just be a lurker but an active contributor!!!

Another thing Mindy, I am also interested in hearing about your experiences so far. A woman I know is about to embark on the exact same thing as you and I kinda fear for her. So I'm sure you have wisdom to share about trying a floral biz w/o much experience. Anyway, enjoy the site!

Jumping into the flower business with my nanny was a huge gamble. I personally knew this my nanny on the other hand had great expectation for the business and unfornately we might not make it there's is just so many things that were not researched to the fullest or changed once we took over came into effect as the Mercuary POS payment that was never disclosed on the contract. So with that said I would maybe think about a different business unless she has a partner that has experience in the Floral business!!

Did the old owner ever let you look at the books?? Due diligence should have lead you to all of those things...It sounds to me like you were sitting ducks for a not so honest person who was hopeful that you would not know what to look for in the financials...

Unfortunately, to pay a designer and not have many accounts and not be able to make things yourself, you may be up the creek without a paddle. The floral business accounting is one of the most convaluted aspects and without an understanding of how things work could make it that much harder to get...

Yes, the previous owner did let my nanny go over the books financial statements, bills, all the 9 yards, and everything matched up, but she also had the POS on deferment for 6 months so basically I never was on any statement previously until the January statement which as you know comes in Febuary. Also the big account she went and gave them to her grandson and told them because there Jewish there weird people!! Religion should have nothing to do with ur work ethic!!

Well that brings us to another thing...Accounts are OK but not garaunteed. There really is nothing to keep them with you. Do you have more than one wire service?

Mindy, you don't need both. You may decide you don't need any, but for certain, get rid of one now.

How many more months do you owe on the computer system??

Can you sell your system, if you want out of thet service?

Can you get credit for an independant system, should you sell the system you have now, or so you need a system within the WS to provide needed credit?

How much of the thousand dollars a month is Wire Out? How much is computer system and fees?

I'm curious... you mentioned the old owner gave a client to her grandson... do they have another shop in the area?

V

Mindy,
There are some terrific threads with a lot of info for new shop owners - I really think it would benefit you to read these. I'm not saying you shouldn't ask questions, just thought these may help you in addition to the advice you're receiving here.

There is so much info archived here, from 2002 till now, that it's hard to find sometimes. I hope these help you, and take some time to dig through the forums, especially Wire Services and Technology - lots of good info here.
