My wife is convinced that we need an Au Pair, I have been dreading bringing in someone to live with us. She has been hounding me to look for one. I have been searching www.aupair.com and have no idea what to look for. Problem is that they are all hot. When I told Marcy that, she said "we are not bringing in an attractive girl. Is there a place for hairy ugly eastern european Au Pairs someone could recommend? Probably not.

Seriously, has anyone had experience with an Au Pair?

lol lol lol SMART woman that Marcy!!

hmm........my daughter "nannied" for 7 years while working a 40 hr/week job and or going to school full time and nannying on her off hours from school. She made dam good $$ Still does "babysitting" for Drs and Anesthetists........at age 29.....but I don't know if her husband could find a job in CT (he's a Boiler Engineer and supervises a trash to energy plant in Portland ME)...........so if you can find a job for him, she loves kids (other people's kids that is....probably will never have grandkids with this one) until they start mouthing off and the parents practice "new parenting skills"...........then she abstains. Spare the rod and spoil the child just doesn't work with her......she takes no physical or mental abuse from children under the age of 12..........
Oh yeah, forgot the most important......I love to go to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods so I'd visit often!!

Our best friends have had several Au pairs over the years. Over the time these young people stayed with the family, they became just like another member of the family. To this day their kids have visited them once they returned to their homelands. These Au Pairs have shared their culture with the kids and in return have learned about American culture first hand. I think that over a several year period our friends had 5 Au pairs, with never a single problem.

Well when I looked at it again I thought maybe you didn't mean what I though you meant and didn't want to go down a bad path based on a misunderstanding. But if you DID mean that, then I think my idea would work. lol

Hi
Well now that I am learning more, I basically pay 200 per week, room and board, pay for part of college classes, and supply car, all for 45 hours per week. Does this sound like a deal?

I dunno....my family's never had to deal with au pairs/nannies...we had our good old mexican grandma aka abuelita who cooked us good food and made us pick chile peppers off the plant to eat as punishment when we were out of line!

To me it does sound like a lot to pay and provide for someone. I could understand if they were living with you and on call (?) but not just for 45 hours a week.

I know my sis in law paid $10 pr hour + room and board, and paid for a couple of other extras. This was for one small baby.

I think it sounds pretty good, if the person has other help from parents or something for college. But working 45 hrs a week + going to college sounds like it'd be hard.

if Marcy is hot over this idea, does she know anyone who as an au pair. get some recommendations on an agency.

I had a teen who watched my kids when she was in HS. My kids loved her (she alway came with a suitcase filled with activities) She went on to Nanny in Chicago. I think she found her job by inquiring at Loyola or one of the other area colleges for nanny positions thru staff postings.
