I am making a balloon arch for our towns 375th b-day celebration in a couple of weeks. It's been many years since I last did one and balloons are not my strong point. Does anyone here know
1) Is curling ribbon strong enough or is there a specific type of string to use?
2) Is there a formula for figuring out how many balloons?
3) How long will it stay afloat?

Any other tips and advice will be gratefully appreciated.

It depends on the type of arch........as Eric suggested......check the Qualatex website. - For an economical arch - use a string of pearl arch, for a long lasting arch.....use a frame and do a air-filled arch, You can use braided 360Q for a unique look.....almost a candy cane look.

Lonk A Loons!!!

I do not do a lot of balloons--and I avoid arches--BUT--my niece turned 16 two years ago--could not say "no"
So I tried Link-A-Loons from Burton and Burton---Now, I LOVE Arches!!!
Up in no time and it is lots of fun --Just did three for my High School Reunion--I bought the CD-- Found it very easy--
For something longer lasting they also have a mylar that has a hole in the middle and you stack them
Found them both to be "Fool " proof!!

Thanks, Chantelle! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I plan to keep it pretty simple since I am donating my time and giving the ballons at cost as my contribution to the town wide celebration. I really hate balloon work so this will be a challenge. I appreciate the help.

I do most of my arches on conduit and will be happy to advise you how to do that, if that is the route you are going.

Otherwise inside over tables you can use link o loons, the string of pearls technique, or the magic arch ballons. All of these are easy for beginners and each has a different look. When you do string of pearls arch spend the extra few dollars on marked fishing line (monofilament - sold by ballon retailers)

Anything using helium needs to be done the day of, air inflations can be done ahead of time. Magic arch inflated with air can be used over again, multiple times, but they do tend to tear easy, so watch over inflation, and stress around the hole in the center.

Let me know if you have other questions. HTH

I do arches all the time and use fishing wire attached to balloon weights either side. i use about 25 balloons for one over a buffet table but take extra just in case. I get mine from the fishing shop, it is really cheap.

Good luck and if you need any more advice just ask :)

The same line with marks on it every so many inches (I use 11") is really cheap from the balloon wholesalers and is 55 lb test. It's a little more than fishing line but not enough to be a deal breaker. It makes the arches (string of pearls) nearly idiot proof
which is helpful if you are inexperienced or not great with "eyeing" it up.

Just curious, ballooners, what do you charge on your string of pearls arches?

Go for string of pearls or link o loons, quick and cheap. Great color impact on a shoestring budget. I missed this post last night.
Good luck!
