I have had a great revelation over this Mother's Day holiday.

My shop is located in a pretty large suburb of Denver.
I have had my shop for a long time. I know the ropes.
I try very hard to go above and beyond expectations, but we all know
that imperfections and accidents occur. Drivers break flowers, water gets spilled in the delivery vehicles (even thought I send everyone out with a gallon of water), flowers get sent out that are not in perfect condition. When such a volume leaves the shop during a holiday, it happens. It used to be that when the phone starts ringing at 1 or so, I take a deep breath and pick it up. I, of course, honor each and every complaint.

Not anymore - why? Because, I don't get them. NO COMPLAINTS. It's been a few holidays, where there haven't been complaints. I think I had two, a few days after valentine's this year. None so far for mom's day, none for Xmas. Why???????

I think I figured it out yesterday. It's because recipients have been burned by 800, pf, and the other order gatherer providers. When the delivery person gets to the door (contract drivers), people will ask them where the flowers are coming from. When they tell them Cherry Blossoms, the recipients get excited and tell them how much they enjoy our flowers. It used to be that I would get a complaint if a stem of pixis carns had broken. Not anymore-I don't usually use pixis much - but still, I'm sure flowers get broken during transport.
The other guys have made my product look great. People accept the mess ups that occur because our flowers are still so much better.
I think it is a hoot.

In response to another thread, yes, I did turn off my machines on
Friday night. Kept the off until today. I was sick and tired of getting orders for $39.99. Everytime, I would have to turn it on, a slew of $39.99 (my listed minimum)orders popped up. At a 39 percent discount (all fees accounted for) $39.99 equals $24.39, take off $5.00 for the fee I give the contract drivers, what does that leave? Not enough to make it worth my while.
Probably not enough to cover cog and overhead.
I apologize to the real florists out there. But, I can't do this anymore.
The numbers do not ad up.
I am sick and tired of rejecting order, after order, after order. Sick of it. Some other florist can have this business. I don't want it anymore.
I want to give my real clients good value and good service. Not a order from the easiest click on google.

Teleflora is getting as bad as the others. Their $39.99 web specials are insane. The "enchanted evening" - with two blooms of white stargazers. 3 white roses, and white alstro, ti leaf - for $39.99 delivered? How about the lavender vase with 3 lavender roses and the florigene minis for $44.99? I would like to know who can do this arrangement, with the florigene minis and even break even?? Not me. Is Stems and Bunches selling Florigene product cheap? If so, sign me up. Is Stems and Bunches still around?
And the $7.00 they give us for delivery = $4.27 after the 39% taken off.
Can anyone out there do a delivery for $4.27 - I can't.
Four years ago, I did a press release for Environmental Colorado about raising gas costs affecting florists. I calculated the exact cost for my to do a delivery - it was $7.95 - that was when gas was hovering around $2.00 per gallon.
I have quit FTD. Have to stay around until August, until I'm out of their directory. I have dropped my FTD web site and my Teleflora site(as of May 01). I will no longer carry any kind of codified container. Does anyone need any crappy pink vases?

It's sad, because the wire services have turned us against each other. I really don't want wire in orders anymore. I'm tired of working so hard, with not enough return.

I will no longer rant, I will take action.

Sad but true - and the crux of the matter is the part in bold.

I fell your pain Cherrie.

Cherrie,
KUDOS TO YOU GIRL!!!!! I agree with every single word you said, You are my hero for the day!!

Cherrie,

I totally agree! I am no longer wired, but when I send items out, I usually pop up the zipcode and look at the average minimums in the town (obviously Manhattan's min's are a little hight than Debuque's) I always add $10 to their minimum and tell my client that is the min ($35 becomes $45). My clients are very understanding that I want to make sure both of us are proud of what gets sent. I know this is a little off topic, but those f^#*ing $34.95 orders used to drive me NUTS!!!!!:hammer:

It's funny you should mention complaints. It has been my experience that Mother's Day is the largest volume of complaints for any holiday. As usual, we always get a few....Here are the highlights:

" I ordered the pleasantly purple vase from 800 flowers and my grandmother is telling me that there is hardly any purple in it". Well, the pitcher only has lavender lisianthus and lavender daisies, everything else is in another color. It was filled as ordered and you may want to contact who you ordered it from (800flowers) if you are unhappy with YOUR selection.

"I received an arrangement from your shop and I want to know why there isn't a drop of greenery in the arrangement". Well, your son ordered your arrangement on line and that is the arrangement he chose for you.

"So you are saying that your shop didn't make the arrangement". No, I am saying that we made it exactly like the photo of the arrangement your son chose. If you would like to see it, I suggest you go to www.teleflora.com and see it for yourself.

I give nothing back on those types of complaints.....

I call those BS complaints...I swear peoples monitors need to be wiped clean because they do not see the same thing you and I see...

I got one about the crazy for daisy arrangement-customer said for 65.00 dollars I thought that it should have been fuller than the picture I looked at...but the 65.00 included her service charge and local delivery and tax all of which she was not clued into about. Sorry not my fault, are the flowers fresh and nice?? Oh yes, it is just not worth 65.00....

Bah humbug.....stupid people...

Hello, I am calling to complain that I received a vase with only 10 tulips and some greens, and I don't appreciate it.

Ma'am , I'm sorry, but that's exactly what was ordered for you.

Just ten tulips, no other flowers? I'm telling my son on you. He'll be expecting a replacement.

Ma'am he ordered 10 tulips in a vase, with minimal greens and no filler.

Well I don't like what you sent, and the other company said I should get something new.

After some back and forth, Ma'am I don't like what your son sent you either, but it wasn't my choice. We'll send something else tomorrow, just in kindness to you. Next time have your son call us directly, and we'll help him pick out something nicer. Have a nice day and we'll send something for you tomorrow.:(

I've worked in the biz for a few years and have seen so many owners fed up w/wire services. I am starting my shop with no wire service and still get told by florist friends that you have to have a wire service. No I don't! One asked me what I'll do without the selection guides...um, I have enough descriptive powers to discuss options with a customer and can show them fresh flowers right then and there to help w/visuals. Then I just hop on the internet and find a florist and use my cc. The wire services have a lot of florists brainwashed and afraid they can't survive without them. It's a bunch of bs, IMHO. The websites they provide are blah and expensive, the fees are high and I congratulate anyone who has the guts/smarts to be done with them. Sorry if there are any wire service reps here, but that's how I feel.
