Another question regarding my hotel work.

I'm using a boat-load of 80 cm Bells of Ireland in this week's design. Although I love the natural tendency of Bells to 'point up' within 24 hours, I really would like to maintain the curviness they offer when I first receive them.

Do you think I could maintain the curve by wiring them? Not sure how I would place the wire on the stem length or in the stem so it is not noticeable but I'll play with that.

If I force the Bells to maintain a curve, will it shorten their vase life?

As usual, thanks for all your suggestions.

Wiring will probably shorten the vase life - Molucella ( Bells of Ireland ) are phototropic flowers......they will turn and twist toward the strongest light source.

I would sell that point to your client - This is the natural progression of that flower.....try to design it in such a way that it maximizes the phototropic tendencies.

there are times when I want the stems to stay in the curve they are in. I take a wire-about 20ga.and run up the middle of the stem. Stems are much like bamboo, hollow with a joint. The heavier wire shoves up the center really easy, and it will hold the shape.I have done this for bridal bokay,s and party centerpieces. I haven't noticed that it shortened the life of the flower either.

We did a major hotel installation that had to last about a week for several years.

We tried wiring and not wiring the bells. They lasted longer when we did not wire. When we did wire, & they tried to bend toward the light, they sometimes looked strangled & limp-ed.

We learned quickly to let nature take its course. they are phototropic. Educate your client, and allow they to enjoy the beauty of a really cool & funky flower!
