Love the story and thought it great that the end picture showed the perfect structure of the spiral.

Very, very nice. Thanks for sharing this!

Mary Lou, Thanks for posting this about my program at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. I had seen the actual newspaper article but didn't realize it was on the Internet!

For a newspaper photographer, I thought he did a great job artistically capturing some of the floral arrangements. The way he paid attention to the negative space in the multiple vase composite arrangement was great. From a different angle, it wouldn't have been quite the same. He "got" the concept.

Negative space is the most positive thing in my artistic life!!!

Spoken like a true artist. Many folks do not realize that negative space is not negative, but a real part of the design.:soapbox:

Cuts with a knife

That is an interesting looking knife he is holding in the picture with helicona birds ....what kind of knife is that and where can I get one? Thanks in advance...

It's actually a Fiskars pruner, not a knife. The ergonomic type with one handle that pivots with your hand as you open your fist. One blade is black and the other silver, so only the silver blade shows clearly in the photo.... makes it look like a knife.

By the way, at the workshop the next day, with 28 top garden club members, most of whom had national blue ribbons, the most popular technique I taught them, during a whole day of workshop, was how to cut with a knife. They all cut with clippers, which is not only bad for most flowers, but really slows you down. They had always been curious how to hold a florist knife properly and very afraid of cutting themselves, since it LOOKS like you're cutting into your thumb (but as we know, the material pulls your thumb AWAY from the knife) and once they learned how to cut that way, there was such JOY. They went from hands trembling with fear as they tried nervously to make their first cut, to truly ecstatic joy of accomplishment, mainly from the courage it took them to overcome the fear. No one had ever taken the time to show them.

That was a good ego check for me. All my fancy design techniques, and the hit of the day was how to cut with a knife. He he.
