From Julie Mulligan's Blog:
1-800-FLOWERS.COM Floral Design Council

This week I was invited to attend a design council presentation by the BloomNet, division of 1-800 FLOWERS. In their continued pursuit of excellence in the world of floral product development 1-800 FLOWERS reaches out to leaders in all areas of the floral industry and brings them together with other members of the 1-800 FLOWERS team to brainstorm, share, and create. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet some kindred spirits and to see what other designers are up to. While I can’t show you any of the designs that were presented at this time as they are in the early stages of the product development cycle I am happy to introduce you to the four talented floral artists who participated in this session. All four brought their experience and skill as well as their passion for floral design to this event. To find out more about each one you can view their full biographies below.
The four designers are Andrea Nordloh Ancel,
Frank Brice, AIFD, PFCI, Mary Linda Horn AAF, AIFD, OCF, PFCI and Bryan Swann and bios of each are included in the post.

An eclectic group for sure with different talents, tastes and specialties. Will be interesting to see what they produce in future efforts.

I imagine 800F will come out with a more upscale line of design, more current, more stylish than the other two cookie cutter makers...

Well, I have not had much opportunity to see Frank Brice's work.....except in an older issue of PFD.......but I have worked with Mary Linda on more than one occasion and the lady is an incredible talent. If there is a way to make an upscale, creative, out of the ordinary design for 29.99, Mary Linda has the talent, skills, and knowledge to do just that.

I absolutely love Mary Linda. She's about one of the nicest, heartfelt, sweetest people on earth. But, I am sadden with her affiliation with BloomNet.
We need to stop supporting these vampires of our industry.
I know Mary Linda does not have a shop, what about the other two designers?

I had the opportunity to ride the FTD float last year, a great honor for float designers. Had to say no - couldn't do it.
This year, FTD won't be doing a float. The first time in many, many years.

We need to let these companies that are destroying us, that they can't be our enemy and then let them make us offers we can't refuse.......

And, in my humble opinion, BloomNet is the enemy.

My local wholesale house has Frank Brice do their in house designing and he does a couple of in house show every year...Very creative and his color choices are fabulous....He does things with ribbon, wire and accessories that would amaze you...

Someday I will take some pictures and post them.

There's a stunner. Wow.

IIRC FTD had an exclusive agreement with the Tournament of Roses to sponsor the only flower company float.

Wonder if another company will step in? Otherwise, one of the most widely seen flower events in the world will be without a flower company.

Um, uh... Cathy...

They're NOT a "Flower Company"....they don't touch flowers....they're a, ah, um... hmm...

Mark -

'They've' never touched flowers since the inception, if you look at it that way.

The FTD brand is synonymous with flowers and next year is the 100th Anniversary. Dropping out of the Rose Parade will likely be seen as a negative signal to consumers about both FTD and the flower business.

Wow...another nail in the flower coffin. Sorry to hear that ther wont be a float. I agree with Cathy on this one..the more flowers are promoted in the consumers eye, the better we benefit. We may not care for the advertisers but many folks are just looking at the parade....what a pity...I wonder if this is the "annoucement"?

Agreed, and one has to wonder "why", especially on the 100th when they would garner a bunch of "free" publicity for the anniversary.

Perhaps they "want" to distance themselves from the florists in the consumers eyes. They have a bunch of lemmings flowing off the cliff already and probably think that no matter what they do the florists will hang anyway. By distancing themselves from the florists they continue to enforce "their brand" gathering direct consumer dollars while maintaining the florist segment out of plain ignorance.

Every float in the parade is an "exclusive" for their industry.
One car company-Honda, I believe, one pharmacy company, Bayer - I think,
etc, etc....
Teleflora, but that would probably go to Charmisa Floats-where Rick Salvaggio has worked. He did not do floats last year.
FTD has been with Fiesta since the beginning - I think.
We are the best float company - but, I guess I am prejudiced.

G-d forbid it would be 800?????

Who knows, it's all about money......

Wonder if Jim could share any info?
