OK - this one made me stop, think, and even make a phone call. As far as I can tell, it was a local event, not national.

Banner sign on the corner when I drove by the Nissan lot BUY 2 GET 1 FREE Your choice Armada or Titan any combination.

So I called. They are offering the customer buy a combination of 2 Titan full size trucks or 2 Armada SUV or one of each and you get a free (??? I forget which one but it is a little compact car with 35 mpg).

Wow. Brilliant marketing! If ANYONE takes them up then they have sold 3 vehicles with one transaction, cleared 3 off the lot, and some customer is going to be so happy telling his/her friends about the deal they got. All for the cost of a $100 or less banner and a little advertising maybe. The two purchased vehicles are full price but 08 model AND they are the bigger gas vehicles which seem to be selling slower right now.

I am not going to be buying into this program, but I think it is brilliant maketing in a tough economy. And a good example of ... Don't complain about everything, DO SOMETHING!

So what lesson can we learn from this?

buy 1 get 1

we offer customer deals with buy 1 get 1 free on things we want to clearence. We don't say clearence so the customer does not think it is old product and we move 2 instead of 1 at 50% off. Also sell my fragrance lamps everyday at buy 1 get 1 50% off an I market it as 1 for them and 1 for a gift . We sell 2 or 4 every time . Works very well! It is all about mind games with todays consumer .
