I have a wedding of two scientists from Purdue University. They want to do creative centerpieces with possible beakers, test tubes, etc....and the bride likes the "woodsy" look. They are getting married outside at a Girlscount Camp and the reception is in the lodge. She likes the look of branches and small flowers........

I need inspiration and ideas.

My first thoughts are of different sized and shaped beakers in stands with grasses and twigs "flowing" from one to another. Perhaps some "explosions" of flowers, as with gerberas or other long-stemed flowers arranged in a sort of fountain design.

I would say to do beakers and test tubes with an armature of twigs....and flowers...

What is green and sits on a stool?

Answer: A Girl Scout doing her duty.

Sorry, I just came to mind when you said the location was a girl scout camp.

I love the idea of using the beakers along with armatures.

oasis has bouquet holders that look like test tubes and beakers. We curled curly willow and bear grass into them with mini gerberas coming out.

American Science & Surplus is my go to place for scientific/lab glassware. Just be aware of sizes when ordering...250 ml sounds like it should be big, but it's not. Get out your measuring cup to help visualize the sizes, if I recall the 50ml is like a shot glass! Some of the Australian ferns and feather ferns for the outdoorsy look, scabiosa pods are both odd and earthy looking.

What about doing "specimens" under a glass cloche? Some kind of earthy and interesting blossom, like an echevarria or a cool branch? I got tulip tree branches today, that would look cool under glass. Magnifying glasses and field books for favors!

Get a container, and start off with lots of differnt twigs, birch, contorted willow, arrange them straight up with height, then add in different flowers at differing heights etc, and throughout the design, some to the front, some in the middle, some int he back the ones at the top can be put in test tubes as they wont have the stem lenght. I have found that ranunculus and smaller headed flowers suit this design. Also line flowers such as liatris also look good. I have done a few of these as free reception flowers, cant believe i did not get a pic.

You can then do a twig structure around the base, i hope you can picture this as i truly think it would be perfect.

You didn't say when the wedding is... but I am hearing that Lotus pods are popular for this fall. You could use moss as a base for the centerpieces, under the beakers.

I am going to give you an idea - inspired by the lunch decor created by Howard Silver AIFD at the St. Louis symposium.

You need several sizes of steel tomato cages........You will need small mesh poultry netting ( bright silver )......... You will need to anchor the tomato cages into a plaster filled metal container UPSIDE DOWN......Wide end up.

using very small cable ( zip ) ties to attach your wire - cut your wire mesh into strips and interlace them in the steel structure of the cage. Accent Decor has 12 inch long test tube type vases......that can be wired onto a structure.

You then use singular stems, blossoms, etc in the tubes. - You can even have a tag hanging from the tube telling the true botanical name. You can intersperse blank cd's to hang as reflective elements.

Industrial, Techno feel combined with a garden sensibility.

I think some moss and lichen mats for the table centre, then some grasses tucked around to add texture, the branches can be crrosses over the top of
some clear pilsner, gradnier (Accent Decor 24") with the beekers clustered with
small flower clusters, and suspened tubes of the same small flower. They can
be all one color per table or a different single color per table. Using the colored wire to suspended the tubes, add candles for a soft glow.
If winter time the branches could be whitem with some sparkle!!!
Many good ideas are given.
Good Luck, Inferno sound like a great project to work on.

Hi
What do you guesstimate she will spend for a tablepiece?

My Mother-in-law is a retired science teacher and gave us a wood rack for 6 test tubes a few years back. For a small centerpiece, or side center, I think something like a rack with test tubes, and single woodland flowers would be lovely and fit the theme of the girlscout camp. I like the idea of the botanical name attached with a tag, that someone posted too.

Before buying glassware, you should see what they have...they probably have 2 labs full!
