Question about the underground railroad.

Many Slaves traveled north prior to the American Civil war. What happened to them?

Have been "north of the border" on several ocassions but see few african "north americans" when there.

Not trying to be "funny" here. Just wondering how this subject is covered from a historical view.

All I can recall, is that English law outlawed slavery prior to the States, and the Slavery return laws which nullified sancuarity in the northern states.

There are many African Canadians living in Canada, and myself for one (being of part African decent) am quite proud of Canada's part in the underground railway. I'm fuzzy on the numbers, but many, many slaves made their way into Canada and their decendants still live here today.

The ethnic mix in Canada varies by region, just as it does in the US. Toronto is the world's most ethnically diverse city, while extremely rural areas are mostly white anglo.

Dresden, Ontario was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Check out this site for more information. http://www.uncletomscabin.org/heritage.htm

The area is not far from Port Huron or Detroit. :) And there is soooo much to see in this part of the province.

I suppose that would depend on your definition of 'extremely rural'.

In many rural locations, the residents are far from 'white anglo'. Much of Northern Canada is heavily populated with our indigenous peoples. From my own experience, I can say that 'northern ontario's' "white" population tends to be French-Canadian, not "Anglo".

Audra - far from 'Anglo' herself.

Ok, Audra, very true ... I over-simplified.

There are plenty of natives ... whom I intended to include in the first post, and had a brain-fart.

The rest are whities.

Sorry, if I got out that ol' soapbox:soapbox: it's a pet peeve of mine. That people think the 'Great White North' also denotes skin colour is just WACKED. It's certainly not true in the Sault.

I went to a high school where 35% of the students were native and we had our resident Pakistani, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese students. Maybe 40% of the school was caucasian.
