I have a customer that came in today and said her cats go ballistic when they see Babies Breath. THey want to eat it, play with it etc.

She wanted to know if Babies breath could be in the cat nip family.

I said, I am not sure but will ask my friends at flower chat and see what they will tell me.

So anyone with cats that does the same thing or a reason I can give this lady.

I have a shop cat.. she does nothing around BB??? This ladies cat has some sort of BB fetish maybe??

I bet the cat thinks it's a swarm of little moths or something. My cats love chasing the little white moths that come up from the grass. Just a thought...

I have had cats for the last 25 years, they have all had a fetish for BB. They also go crazy for bear grass. I think it is the movement it makes.

I can not bring either into the house or they knock the arrangement over rubbing against it and eating the bear grass.

my shop cat doesn't touch it but my daughters cats won't leave it alone, they destroy anything with baby's breath.
I also have quite a few customers who have said their cats have taken the baby's breath right out of the arrangements.
I believe it is the "smell" of it because most customers state it is only the BB.

I've had issues with babies breath and caspia both. Tried to add some babies breath to the Christmas tree one year, but had to stop using the bb halfway down from the top. Found little pieces all over the house. The caspia gets chewed on and crumbs are left on the table.

We have a cat who lived in the shop for 4 months when he was little, he slept on the work table and carried rose petals around. Other than that he never really bothered the flowers, at home I can't leave anything out that he can reach. He chews, tries to smell, knocks things over - I can't bring anything home anymore.

Elmo, like me, doesn't like babies breath. But he's crazy for grass (not the smoking kind). I too think it's the movement.

All of my cats 5 in all have gone crazy for chewing my fingers after working with bb all day....They have had similar reactions to catnip...2 of my cats would go as far as taking bb out of vases and tearing it up...

They also all roll all over my shoes after stepping on greens and stems all day...

strange we have had and have cats and not one has ever gone nuts over the BB or messed with the plants around the house. (Perhaps it's because of the cactus interspersed with the other?:) )

I grow bb and our cats don't bother it outside either.

I wonder if it's certain BB varieties?

I've had cats for years & years & years , have never had any touch BB. Had one that went nuts over cooked broccoli, the shop cat loves ferns when they are laying on the design table , likes to fluff them and lay down on them. On the other hand I have a 13 year old black lab cross that has a fetish for ladies underwear, prefers dirty but will steal and eat some in the laundry basket , which can't be left on the floor, all hampers have to have a cover , seeing that I had 3 girls and now 2 stepdaughters , he's stolen lots of underwear over the years , good thing he hasn't figured out how to open dresser drawers.

The cat is most likely and inside cat, and has a taste for grass that she can't get! Babies Breath has a high content of something (chlorophyl?) that the cats naturally crave. If she went outside she would get that from grass! I had customers that would come in every week for their own flowers, and buy 2 extra stems of gyp for their cat. OR they would buy a bouquet and make sure to take the gyp out!
A good solution and suggestion for her is to let her cat have some gyp...or else get the kitty a greens dish at a pet store...or simply soak a sponge, put it in a plastic dish, cover it with grass seeds and let grow. I had customers tell me this really worked, and the cats stopped tearing at the gyp, because they had their own grass! I have never heard of outside cats reacting like this, because they get it outside.
Hope that helps! You could post a litte "did you know" sign for cat-lovers on your counter.

I have 3 cats, and I grow cat grass for them.

They will still tear out the gyp from any arrangement, and one has a thing for bear grass. All other flowers, and all my plants, are never touched.

Cats are weird.

My boy has not come across BB yet, but he will not leave alone any flowers that I bring home.

I grow the cat grass for him as he is an inside cat (as all cats should be - sorry but I learnt the hard way and I am not losing another little darling before his time plus the damage they do to the native fauna, keep them inside!) - it helps with digestion & furballs.

Having said that I think movement could well have something to do with it - cats go crazy for little flying bugs and the like.
