The City called me today and wanted to order a draping they could put on a vacant chair when a council member, mayor, etc die at the city hall. I have not ever dealt with this type thing. Do any of the Flower chat members know what they are asking for? Or, where do you get them?

The local funeral home flower shop told them they didn't have a clue. Neither did I, but, I sure wasn't going to tell them that. Instead, I told them I have a network of florist friends that could help us decide what would be best to do.

If you haven't heard of the draping on the chair, what would be your suggestion as an alternative to their delima? I did tell her that it possibly was a passe' way to note a death. Does anyone have a unique or proper thing to suggest that would denote the death. They would keep it out for a few days. They also ordered a silk wreath to use at the council chambers at the same time.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Carol, I think I would take two chair ties in black and tie them diagnally from one side of the chair to the other similiar to a beauty contestant...Knot it at the side of the chair and place a cluster of symbolic blooms....that's my best suggestion....good luck....

And an excellent suggestion Sher. We used to drape pictures in the Town Hall and the Legion in a similar fashion.

Excellent suggestion. One other idea would be to cover the chair with a black cloth and knot in the back, as we do sometimes for weddings/receptions. (Not a clear description, but it's too early for me to describe better)

I hope you were able to figure out what your customer was looking for.

We have done a "drape" by using a pew clip, designed and placed atop the back of a chair which had a slip-cover on it. We make the flowers so they trail down around the seat of the chair on either side. Lots of times a framed photo of the deceased is placed on the seat with the flowers surrounding it. I hope this makes sense.

Seat Drape

I had this request a few months ago, we took a Piece of Flannel, cut it to hang over the back of the chair, Used Black Ribbon on the edges (basically a modified Funeral Blanket) covered it with cushion poms in white and cut the Person's Initial out of Black Silk Fabric (Tack 2000 to a piece of Cardboard) and Attatched it to the front. It looked really good, and this is probably what they meant by the term "Chair Drape". Hope this helps!
