I'm doing a cross promo in 2 weeks with a new store on my street that has added a lot to our neighborhood. They are called Barefoot Books and they basically are a publisher of their own childrens books which they sell in their Flagship store in Concord. They have all kinds of daily events that include their books in interactive ways, like story time, puppet shows, crafts, etc. They are doing a craft hour called The Royal Wedding where they will read some stories about weddings and then make crowns and (here's where I come in) something with flowers. The children could be very young pre-schoolers so the flower part has to be easy. I'm thinking about bringing carnations which they can decorate with glitter and simple curling ribbon streamers. Maybe those nice royal purple carns or something. I'll be experimenting with glue and glitter tomorrow but I welcome any other ideas you might have to make these look like royal flowers, keeping in mind they are wee tots!

Helen,

Sounds like good ideas, I like the idea of purple carns for royalty and curling ribbon. The glitter would scare the hell out of me, though. What are you thinking about using as adhesive? I know, I know. But.....you don't want mama bears ticked off because you exposed their little ones to toxic fumes.

I do see though that just carns with curling ribbon would not be something that stuck with them. Isn't there a quick-drying glitter marker from Crayola? I wonder if you used white carns and then let them decorate with the markers? I don't know, just throwing another idea out there.

Well, I was too busy to experiment today but my thought was to squeeze the carns tight and hold them closed with a rubber band, dip into something like watered down elmers glue, then in fine glitter, so that it is tipped in glitter. I have no idea if this will work but if not, I'll try to find something jewel like to glue on. I can't really use the wired jewels that I would normally stick in the centers because the wire might be too dangerous for little ones. So why are you scared of glitter? The mess? The place has a big craft area and they make messes all the time so that should be OK. I think kids that young will have a lot of parental help....hopefully!

You can get the elmers school glue at dollar tree..a gallon. Kids love glitter..and royal purple is royal enough to make a theme...Michaels and the dollar stores usually have great little cheap trinkets that kids love for these types of projects...

Thanks, I'll pick some things up at the dollar store and see what I can do with it. Ofcourse this thing is the Friday of Easter weekend, but I decided to do it anyway for the publicity it will bring me right at the beginning of the crazy 3 holiday marathon. This place gets great press for everything they do and they have marketing experts, so I'm hoping to ride their coat tails to publicity.

Instead of decorating the flowers, why not use them as a "stamp"? Different sized flowers, i.e. carns, poms, leaves, etc. can be dipped in tempra paint and stamped on a paper plate to create a garden picture which would represent a "Royal China keepsake plate".
The kids can add glitter, trinkets, ribbon or whatever you have on hand.
