Hmmm, I wonder what this would do for all those "Teleflorist" or OG sites out there...

United as the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse, 10 companies have hired the law firm Alston and Bird LLP to persuade federal lawmakers of the need to crack down against those who claim Web addresses, or domain names, that include - or even resemble - a legitimate company's trademark.

As much as I hate typo squatters, whose fault is it that people mis-type?

Does this mean Apple would own apples.com, abbles.com and everything else close to it? FTD could claim fdt.com, fds.com and every other permutation of three letters close to their own.

This legislation sounds like big business trying shut out everybody else.

Fine, considering a large number of alternatives are the ones seeding computers with malware. These idiots are the reason for pop-up blockers in the first place.

Typos should be a free for all, but the actual trademarks should not be(provided they are not directly competing). We had our .com go to a sqatter thanks to our dodgy ex-web designer. We were unable to renew our domain as it was originally done through their account (LET THAT BE A LESSON TO ALL TOO.....REGISTER ALL DOMAINS YOURSELF) therfore we were unable to do anything until it had expired. As all correspondance concerning dates etc went to the *^$#^'s, we had to just keep checking to see when it expired. This caused the squatters to snatch it, and because we were constantly looking it up, they saw its potential to get traffic or (foolishly), our money!
Unless we could pull large amounts of money from our backsides, there was jack s%^# we could do.......Oh well, one of life's lovely lessons.....onwards and upwards, JUST BE AWARE!
