Thought I would tell you about something that happened at our shop a few days ago.

My niece came back to the shop after supper (our houses all surround the shop) to use the computer. It had been an extrememly hot day and so as usual, she left the back door wide open. A couple of hours later, she thought she heard the shop cat out back and wanted to go and close the door so he would be in for the night. She walked into the design area and it wasn't the cat eating the food, it was a skunk. It turned and tried to spray (thank goodness it was too young) and she headed back the other way and locked herself in the office and called me for help. At the same time as she was dialing I was looking out our window and watched something walk along the side of the building and across the street into the neighbour's yard and realized that it was a small skunk, so when she phoned I assured her that her new friend was no longer in the building. Whew!!!!!!! luck that it didn't spray or it would have gotten the whole shop - front display and back work area. Wouldn't that have been a pleasure to deal with.

A raccoon came in the greenhouse when I was working down there one night. Thank goodness he could not also spray. I don't know which one of us ran faster to get away from the other. Several nights later some animal tore up a lot of the plastic on the greenhouse, apparently trying to get out. What a mess!

I lived on a farm growing up so saw and smelled lots of shunks. I was playing in an old hog house (about 8 yrs. old) and didn't realized there was a Skunk family that had taken up residence. You can imagine what happened. Mom handed me 4 homeade quarts of tomato juice and told me to strip and wash myself down with the juice. She also handed me a towel and new clothes and NOT to come into the house until all was done. It's an aroma that's stays many, many days. You were very lucky is was a baby skunk or it would have been a very skunky flower shop!

My skunk tale (tail)

Last year I was sitting in our living room and I kept hearing a tapping noise coming from our driveway. I went out side and there was a skunk with a plastic cup stuck on it's head. It was going up and down the drieway tapping this cup on the drive.

I went back in the house but realized that the skunk would probably die if the cup was not removed. What should I do.

I ran out to the deck and got my large leather Barbeque gloves and went back out to the skunk who was now tapping his way down the street.

I ran up to him and realized that the business end of the skunk was as important as the cup on his head so I pushed his butt to the ground pulled on the cup and off it came. The skunk and I both looked at each other for a split second during which time we both realized what was going to happen next.

He spun around and lifted his tail, I spun deeked and weaved and put as much distance as possible between myself and the skunk.

Thankfully it was also a young skunk and it just hit my arm with a little blast which I was able to deal with easily. But it was pretty funny.

Several years ago my golden retriever met what she thought was cute black and white kitten out at the farm. Needless to say she has a healthy respect for "kittens" now. I had to do the tomato juice thing. As she is a fairly good size dog and I live in the city I put her in the bathtub (Stupid!) and proceeded to wash her in tomato juice. She turned into an Irish Setter and after she shook herself my bathroom looked like a scene from Psycho!! And yeah, the smell lingered for days!! Gudrun

Thank you Doug for confirming what I already knew... you are a very good, and brave person.

And Gudrun... thank you for conjuring up such wonderfully funny pictures in my head. :)

I live in the woods, and years ago my dalmation puppy found a young skunk to play with.. When she came in I thought I would have to do the tomato trick but the skunk did not spray her.. just a lingering fragrance from the tunbling together I think.. Mama skunk must have had a talking to her youngin' since I never saw it again..Thank goodness.

We don't have many skunks or raccoons since the rash of rabies 10 years ago.. but this morning I did see a deer running across the road.. and last week I met a silver/gray fox.. mostly we have red ones but either this was an old guy or a silver one (looked quite healthy too)
And last fall I saw 3 moose together in a meadow.. unusual to see 3 together they are usually very territorial..
My neighbors all have visits from the friendly brown bear .. they all feed the birds and the bear comes to clean out the feeders.

And that is why I live in the back woods of NH...

Carol... your words make me miss the wilds of Ipperwash even more. No moose or bear, but the rest... happily, yes.

I also really like NH and all its scenery.

I used to go camping with my friend and her family in Ipperwash when I was a teenager. Lots of great memories!
