Conn. cracks down on unregistered businesses

Associated Press - July 16, 2008 6:04 PM ET

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Officials in Connecticut say more than 300 out-of-state businesses have been fined for operating without registering properly.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says the crackdown generated more than $1 million in fines in the budget year that ended June 30.

Blumenthal says the largest fine was $22,380. That was paid by Downers Grove (Illinois)-based Florists Transworld Delivery, also known as the flower-delivery service FTD.

A message was left today for a spokeswoman at the company's headquarters.

State officials say requiring proper registration helps Connecticut consumers. That's because officials can better enforce regulations on workplace safety, wages, environmental protection and other issues.

More on the story from the Hartford Courant including:
Blumenthal and Bysiewicz said some company officials did not know Connecticut's regulations and made good-faith efforts to correct the oversight. Others blatantly ignored the rules, seemingly hoping they would not be caught, Blumenthal said.
Emphasis mine....

$22K is just a slap on the wrist. Wonder of any other OGs got fined?

I checked my state - FTD is registered in New Hampshire.

part of the reason they are registered in Maine had to do with lease agreements on their tech machines...They had to pay the property tax on leased computers their members had. When questioned about it at my tax assessor's office, we found they had not paid the property tax for 3 years...after paying the first two years..Town billed them.
