whatever
Here's one that I managed to squeeze out while at that shop. It was a Sunday on my own in the shop and lots of leftovers left out on the floor to just sit. I was told "Do what ever you want with them or throw them out, whatever." So here's what I did I called it Spooky Elegance for fun since it was right before Halloween....:thumbsup

I would prefer to see your larger sunflower become a lower focal point (balance)

I agree with Rhonda.
The sunflowers capture the visual dominance, both in size and weight of color.
Focal should be at the base, so that your eye travels throughout the bouquet.
I would also include a little yellow in another product. Again, visual balance.
Also, not too keen on the spots of whites. Breaks up the arrangement.

Nice line and shape.

When white is added to an arrangement of intense vibrant colors it seems to wash out the intensity of the colors and it loses that "pop" of color.
I agree also, the sunflowers should be the focus, just make sure when placing them you don't place them like 'eyeballs' looking at you!

Thanks! I thought exactly the same thing(about the sunflowers) when I uploaded and looked at the pics.

Somewhere recently on here, there was a posting about designing for the camera. When the designers started seeing their creations on film, it changed how they designed. Seeing something two dimensionally makes you notice flaws in color or visual weight balance, or angles that could be made better - I think pictures could be a great teaching aid for people learning design!

I agree about the sunflowers, adding more yellow to carry that eye grabbing color through a little, and the white lilies. Practice practice practice - you'll do great.
:)

It is so true Tracy!! Doing the coursework for FDI long distance I used my digital camera to submit the work to be critiqued and graded. Once I took a photo of the arrangement I was able to see my empty spaces, things that looked off and unbalanced color. Sometimes even heights of stems were better revealed too...sometimes I just wouldn't see it until I saw the photo and then looked at it and said Yeah t is too high or too short, etc.
I recommend taking shots of all your work for a quick 2nd opinion.

First off Aileen, let me say that it is a pretty good arrangement done with leftovers! I'm sure that if you had more sunflowers, you would of made it more proportional.

I have dealt with many leftover flowers and found that if you keep the arrangement low, it prevents all the proportion/gaps problems from occuring (especially since you don't really have much choice when dealing with leftovers). You still have to watch the colors (I agree that the white is tricky to use with bright colors).

In the case of the arrangement you made, I really like the euchalyptus collar you have that the base, and I would of gathered the rest of the flowers in a posy and inserted them that way. Then you fill in gaps with greenery (which always seems to be on the floor anyways...).

Athough it needs a little tweeking, I still think it's a very good base arrangement.

Julie,

Thank you! Yes you are right...if I had more I would have done more. Come to think of it those 2 sunflowers were the only good ones left in the bucket the others all the petals were already falling off.
It really was just for fun since I was left on my own in the shop on a Sunday. When I stopped in on tuesday for my check I realized it was gone from the cooler. I was told that they sold it for $125. I was truly shocked.

HA!! Bonus??....um no I got that following weekend a very swift and stern-"I don't want you touching any of these orders!" referring to the 20 wired orders that came in through the morning...it was 10 am when I got there and some of those were supposed to have been made and delivered the day prior. A few days later I turned in my 2 week notice.

last year when i took a class in OKC, i asked Marie Ackerman to take a look at my portfolio and to be brutal with it. we sat down and went through each and every pic.
She said they were good pics and good designs, but just need a bit of cleaning up. the way she showed me how "look" at my designs has helped me so much. if you care to know what she said, i'll share, but sometimes i think people just don't care what i have to say!

I also asked Susan Ayala to look at my pics. She coached me as well, and her advise has been wonderful for me.

FYI Marie Ackerman IS a smarty pants and does know her stuff!! She's awesome.

Shannon: Can you send me the info on how to look at your designs? Every piece of info and advice helps. I am always looking to learn and improve. If you want to be really good you have to have an open mind....for those who don't......we'll they are going to be left in the dust! LOL
