Uh...yeah.... like I said... sooo cute, for now. ;)

I happen to really like skunks and used to skunk sit for a friend of mine... I took Rosie to school during a practice teaching session for the kids. She loved it and the kids loved it. They wrote some very interesting stories about Rosie. By the way, she was de-scented. :)

When our Rosie was fourteen months old, we took her on vacation to a West Virginia State Park. One afternoon, she stood at the back door of our cabin, pointed and said "woof woof". Instead of seeing what I suspected would be a deer, it was a big skunk ambling toward my brother.

That black dog with a big white stripe 'treed' him on the picnic table for a good 15 minutes.

Oh! My! Can baby skunks spray? Where is mother skunk? This could have been really, really bad!

THAT was de-scent of them!!

Good one Mike. :)

Connie, baby skunks can spray.

Baby Skunks

Even baby skunks can spray. Skunks are born with anal scent glands and the amount sprayed increases as the animal grows. Skunks are born naked, blind and helpless in February to April. The females have one litter a year, and the male does not participate in raising the young. Skunks are solitary animals for most of the year. Any groups seen are mother and offspring or a group of young skunks that stay together for a few months.

The young nurse for up to eight weeks, but are able to eat soft food by five weeks when their eyes open and the teeth are erupting. Skunks are independent at about 12 weeks of age, but may still accompany the mother to forage.

As a rough guide, any skunk that is large enough to require the use of both hands to pick up is probably best left alone. Smaller skunks that appear to have been orphaned and are hiding in a den can sometimes be left together as a group if sufficient food and water is left outside the den area in the late afternoon. Juveniles will sometimes emerge before dark and play together - this is fairly common in summer.

Orphaned Baby Skunks

Always wear gloves (latex or vinyl) when handling baby skunks!
Baby skunks whose eyes are still closed and whose fur is still short should be kept warm in a cardboard box lined with a towel.
Place the box on a heating pad set so that the temperature inside the box is about 80 degrees fahrenheit.
After the baby is warm and active, give a commercial rehydrating solution such as Pedialyte by inserting an eye dropper or feeding syringe in the side of the mouth between the front and back teeth area.
A skunk whose body is 4" long should be given about one teaspoonful (5mls) per feeding every three hours.
If you cannot reach a rehabilitator, continue feeding with either kitten milk replacer or puppy milk replacer. Like small kittens and puppies, baby skunks have to be stimulated to produce urine and feces.
Use a damp warm cotton ball and gently stroke the urogenital area. Keep the baby skunk clean and dry.

Thanks for the info, V. Good grief! The things one can learn here!

I know! Isn't it great! My Dad used to say "It's a poor day when you don't learn something." He was one of the smartest people in my life. :)
