So Hubby was just outside gathering seeds for next year. He turns around and theres a deer eating apples off the ground.

Hubby kept doing his thing and the deer kept eating fully aware that hubby was right there! Hubby got about 7 feet away before the deer calmy turns and walked away. It is always fun to see them walk across the yard when there is snow.

Crazy mountain life! and we totally live in town.
Glad it wasn't a bear or mountain lion... Yes we do have them in Durango.

I, too, enjoy the deer that roam our fields. The coyotes - not so much. Yesterday morning I was totally repulsed when I found a beedy-eyed possum in the dog food canister. YIPES!

oH SHANNON, WHAT FUN!!

We regularly have a bunch of deer in our back yard......there are 3 yearlings that seem to be making the back side of our shed their new winter home. They bed down there every night at about 10 pm.

The wild turkey flock is a riot also. We have between 30 to 50 wild turkeys every spring/summer. Haven't seen then for about 3 weeks now, as it is (I think) turkey season in Pennsylvania now.

I should add that we are on the corner of a very, very busy main drag in Pittsburgh, and my house is not in the distant suburbs any more.

This is what happens when we take over where nature alon once was, and they we feed them too!

No mountain lions or bears on our side of the river.
We did have a monkey that escaped from the zoo a couple of years ago. He was on the loose for about 6+ months, and managed to avoid capture! There were sightings of the monkey all over the W. Pa. area.

I just love nature!

Deer, bear, cougars and coyotes around here, but alas, not right where we live... more like 3 or 5 miles from here.

Altho I did have a kitty go missing at the same time that there was a cougar sited 1 mile from here.

My back yard

We get bambis here (Pittsburgh suburb) on a regular basis. The first year we moved to this house I planted a ton of tulips about $75 worth....The little critters had a feast they mowed them down better than a lawn mower!!! :(
My husband was fond of them he would put corn out for them and they would dine in the back yard...and on occasion nibble at the bird feeder.
Witness the photos!

Oh Marie!!
Your house could have been my parent's house in The South Hills of Pittsburgh.

Mom & Dad regularly fed a HERD of 8 to 15 deer all winter. the "girls" would start wandering up from the creek across the road about 4 pm on winter evenings, and stand up at the tree line until my Dad took his 5 gal buck of corn & feed up to their trough & fed them!!

They sold their house 2 years ago, and the lady who bought it likes to see the deer from afar. and she is not interested in feeding them any more. My Mom hopes that the neighbors have taken over the task.

get this...

It's illegal to feed the deer in Colorado.. Not illegal to leave apples on the ground though.
Also illegal to collect rain water!

Shannon why is it illegal to collect rain water??
Here in Australia we most all have rainwater tanks(ours is 2000 litres) and Im so glad otherwise we wouldn't be able to water our gardens, and other things, if you are caught using tap water in summer it's a sustantial fine.

what??......
Yes, Shannon is right, it is illegal to collect rain water to water your
garden! Diverson or something.

We have Elk! Lots of them! Beautiful herd, over 150.
It is not unusual to wait for the Elk to cross our main streets.
Every fall people stop their cars to take photos of the Elk in our
front yard. I wonder how many Christmas cards our house is a
backdrop ?
Seeing deer is more of a treat...their are fewer of them.
But, we do have a mommy deer nest right outside our back window
for a few years in a row.

Because some people who make laws are crazy, pure and simple.

Totally agree with you and after looking at the 9 page ballot today when I voted early, and the wording of some of the issues...well there are some cuckoos out there and we have elected most of them..and then we let them write or re-write laws.......I don't get ther rainwater thing tho...do you know the "reason" for that restriction?
Sher

nope, I don't know the reason. All I know is that if there are clouds that rain over the state of Colorado, the rain belongs to Colorado.

Don't even get me started on mineral rights...

Sher:
I think it has to do with the rainwater falling onto the ground, and progressing as natural runoff to the streams and into the rivers.

the thought process would be that without the rain water to feed them, the rivers and streams, and lakes would dry up. And in Colorado and much of the west, the danger of forest fires would be much greater than they are already without this natural rainwater runoff.

River water is also necessary to generate electricity via the Colorado river....so they don't want any potential water loss, as it would mean a potential energy generation loss.

Also, some folks have devised very, very elaborate rainwater collection systems, which mean that they are not just watering their lawns, but also using the rainwater for drinking, bathing, etc.....and avoiding having the water go thru a water meter!! Means that the town or municipal water authority is not collecting a revenue for the supply of water, and thus cannot collect a revenue for sewage disposal...which is often measured on the basis of gallons of water used.

(Listened to a long and very detailed discussion one night at a municipal meeting about the above....it was amazing how clever people can be to save $30 to $40 per month!!.....and to what great expense we go to to keep them from doing so!!).

There you have it...Big Brother at it's finest......keeping us from the simplest things in the world, like rain water!

anyway, just my .02 on the possible whys......
not that it makes much sense!

I think the ban on feeding deer is because in the off season hunters lure the deer, get them used being fed by people. Then when it's hunting season the pull out their Uzi's and fill 'em full of lead.

in Michigan they banned baiting or feeding the deer due to chronic wasting disease. By drawing deer into close contact with each other, you spread these types of illness.
Fortunately the one case of CWD found on a "deer ranch" was not found in the rest of the herd. It has become a big issue in Wisconsin and Michigan is trying to keep it from spreading here. Deer season is a multi million $ industry.

We have deer in our yard all the time. There have been some nice sized does this fall. Just in time for hunting season. corn fed deer taste just like beef. I hope hubby is successful. I am tired of spending $$$ on veggies and flowers only to have ROWS mowed off during the night by the rats on hooves.

This past spring we had a fox come into our pasture. He would steal chickens from the farm down the street and then come to enjoy his meal under our barn. Little devil drove the farm's German Shepherd nuts! He would sit just outside of the dogs chain limit and clean itself. Gudrun
