Hello everyone, I am in the need of some help. I will be doing a corsage of dendrobium orchids for a wedding. will these hold up throughout the day. How can i keep them from wilting. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Kristin

We have had great success with doing dendro corsages. We do soak our entire bloom in hydration solution and dry it well before adding it into the corsage. Dendros seem to be fairly hardy and last well in corsages from my experience. We have a picture of one in the image gallery here at flowerchat. You can see it here: http://www.flowerchat.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/514/si/corsage

There are several others also.

Dendrobiums seem to be one of the hardiest for corsages. For big events I start making mine on Thursday before a Saturday event and have never had any trouble with them holding up throughtout the day (even in the southern heat). Be sure to spray with Crowning Glory when your design is finished.

I agree with the crowning glory - spray your corsages and the flowers will stay nice and firm. We had one dendro corsage left over at prom time (someone meant to order a bout over the phone, long story) and by the next weekend it looked almost exactly the same. It was in and out of the cooler, worn for fun by several designers over several days. It's nice to see how well they do hold up when you recommend them for things!

PS - I had a mini cymbid that I was using for corsages recently. One bloom was broken from the stem, so I put crowning glory on it, boxed it and put it in the cooler. When it came time two days later to assemble the corsages, this broken one felt more firm than the blooms that were still on the stem, in water, in the cooler!

I love using dendrobs in corsages... they stand up to darn near anything. Don't worry about them. :)

They are so hardy, you can even sprinkle them around or put them on the wedding cake. We done tests and they've lasted for days just laying out on the design bench!

Exactly what I was going to say! Great minds, you think? *wink*

I agree as well. I would put them up against about anything in corsage work as far as lasting ability goes. They have a great base to glue with as well if you are glueing. All around a great corsage flower in my book!

I am so glad to hear that because I have a wedding coming up that wants trees draped out in orchids and I was wondering how far in advance I could start them.

At J's Portland show he showed us some fabulous pre-made orchid products from Amy's Orchids. Earrings, bracelets, etc.

The most exciting thing (for me) was the pre-made orchid garlands, some with beads strung in sections. According to J, you can custom order them and this is where a high profile designer (rhymes with Meston Mailey) gets his. If I remember right they were pretty reasonable for what they were, and they were gorgeous!

Her site is here. Click on "other products" then "garlands" for some examples.

Dendrobium corsages and trees

I love to use dendrobiums in corsages ...glued or wired and if it will help go to www.mississippifloristassociation.org and look at the archived pictures for our convention last year ...there is a tree of draping orchids

Hope it helps...if you have any questions let me know

The picture ia actually in archives random pictures of 2006 convention picture #14

I love dendros, they are so beautiful in corsages. I soak them first in Chrysal Glory and they hold up really well.
