Hi all,
I'm entering a centerpiece competition this Sunday and the theme is...
A Centerpiece For Sympathy...
I have thought about using an oasis sphere and covering it with something pastel and then putting it up on a cylinder and then doing something around the bottom of the cylinder and maybe doing some sheltering above the sphere. I thought about using some clear acolytes too?
The budget is only $35.00 wholesale cost.
I do not want to go really conservative but I do not want to go ultra modern.:hammer:
I am in Christmas mode and I am having h brain #@%*.

Any ideas?
Prayers would be greatly appreciated too!

Most important thing to know is who is judging. Is it a jury of your peers, "people's choice", or a panel of lettered florists.
1. peers, some will seek out mechanics, theme, interpretation
2. people's choice "cutesy" or gimmicky usually gets a nod
3. lettered florists (those who know mechanics, elements & principles) -
be on the top of your game. Cutesy does not help. Structure, texture,
color theme and harmonies, will "win" the game.

All of the above, in my very humble opinion. Good luck!!

Ronda, you are so right in your assessments of judges. I always tell my students to design for the type judge they will have.....if they have the good fortune of knowing who it is ahead of time or if they are qualified.

Mlou, what an outstanding piece of work you presented. All contestants should have a copy of this when competing.

I do feel sorry for people that are judged by people below or equal to their level. They only judge based on their limited knowledge. Personally, I would never enter a contest that was not judged by certified or qualified or AIFD judges.

Several of us have taken judging classes and have a better knowledge of what to look for. Back years ago, I took the FTD certified judge test which required lots of studying, etc. I did pass the test, but, then they dropped the whole thing which is too bad for the industry.

Thanks for all the input y'all!

It is a MAFA design show and Jeff Corbin is presenting and I am guessing he will be one of the judges. So I am not so much worried about that as I am getting my design together. I have put some thought into it today and have several ideas so I am feeling pretty good about it.:hammer:

In response to Carol, the past two years our Designer of the Year contestants were given the AIFD judging sheets to help them evaluate their own designs. Amazing that FINALLY (this is where Education benefits) that our People's Choice and Judged (3 AIFD) Designs were the exact same design/er. It makes you really believe that your education programs are working!!
BTW-thanks MaryLou for the link to the Allied Florists site-I'm going to put that in our Maine State Newsletter in January...(will I need their permission?)
I thought I would die laughing when I got to the last page and I was listed with a credit for contributing (and mentioned in such a group of very respected designers, too).
dzynrprincess....have such fun with it because that is where the true enjoyment of competition lies.

dzynprincess, good luck and tell Jeff Corbin "Hello" for me. You will have a good time if he is around.

Jeff Corbin was at our state association's convention this year, and I had the pleasure of having lunch (sitting at his lunch table) one day. He is a wonderful, fun designer, and he was a delightful lunch companion also. Have fun, Princess!

I met a really nice designer from Texas at sylvia Cup this year her name is Beth O'Reily. Very Talented too! i wonder if she is a FCer? Thanks for the post! I will let you all know how I do and maybe a picture or two. I love for professionals to critique my work. It really helps you learn.

Hi all!
I had a great time at the design show this weekend!
Jeff Corbin is such a talented speaker and designer I learned alot from him!
Well, I did not win the competition but I scored mostly 8s and 10s and I agreed with the judges comments that my focal area was a bit confusing.
I have attached a photo of my design. Any comments from you would be greatly appreciated as I can only learn from you!

Sorry!
Here is the photo....I hope......:dunno: :wallhead: :redface2: :purpletea

:bouquet: It's a beautiful design, Princess! I personally love it. Focal point?? My eye went straight to the 2-3 calla lilies near the beginning of the cascade (top of vase).

Your photograph shows that you have a real talent. Can you tell me who the judges were? I, too, have a little trouble with the focal, but, overall I think you have what it takes. I would give you more critique, but, it is really hard to see everything that needs to be judged by the photograph. How many competitors were there? What was the level of competition? Were you judged by AIFD judges or were there AIFD designers in the contest?
Anyway, good job.

Hi Carol,
Jeff Corbin was one of the judges and I do not know who the other three were. (they only wrote their initials on the score sheets.)
There were only ten centerpieces being judged and yes there were several AIFD designers. Most from Norfolk Florist in Norfolk VA. But what I found interresting was that the person who won 1st is new to the business. Her first competition I think. Her design was beautifully executed. It had very nice lines.
I will post a picture of her design so you can see it.
Thanks for taking a look!
Thank you for taking a look at my design!
