Looking to find the best design school out there. I am not worried about the location. I would prefer getting out of Kansas. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated and researched. Thank you!!

I would first see where the job opportunities might be and them maybe combine a design school and your work. Kinda like an internship with pay. Being that you have worked in a flower shop in the sales side is actually a benefit to owners like myself than just a person that would like to be a designer.
There are plenty of talented designers on this board, I would guess many however have never been to a design school. Hopefully Carol Bice will give her two cents on your question, I would value her opinion the most.

I went to Rittners in Boston because I live nearby. Would not recommend it. It's whole presentation is cheap, starting with their website, but I have kids and it was a proximity thing. i learned enough to get me started but you don't want to do that since there are better schools out there and you don't mind leaving KS.

Hero,
You are truly one of my favorite people in this industry and what a great compliment you gave me. I think we have a mutual admiration of each other since we worked together on FTD Product Development a few years ago.

I do believe strongly in accredited design schools. I think Phill Rulloda's school is tops. In the area closer to Wichita is the one at Stuppy's in Kansas City taught by Bill Harper and one in St. Louis taught by Danny Whitehurst. There are many schools that really don't measure up....so be careful where you go. If you need more or want to ask about certain ones, please email me.

Hero, it so good to have you posting again.

I agree with Carol that Phil Rulloda class is the tops for design. If your looking for a well rounded class you might look at some regional college levels.
You might contact Roger Dennis AIFD in Kentucky, comprenhensive short style course, John Klingel AIFD in West Palm Beach Florida.
If you have never been to AIFD symposium, there are several scholarships available to designer for next year, visit or contact aifd.org or the AIFD Foundation, there on the web site is about 15 design schools that work with AIFD in providing the best floral education possible.
There are many out there, reserach to find the best for you.
Good Luck.

So far, I have heard a lot about Phil Rulloda's school. I looked at the website and I must I am impressed. I think it will probably be where I go. I am working on getting the money to register.

I would like to know if anybody has been to the Palmer Design school in Denver, CO. I rather am partial to Denver, but I don't want to go to a bad school just because I like the city. The school itself is more important. I am not so sure about the website for the Palmer school. It rather worries me actually, but sometimes people just have bad websites. Just wondering if anybody has gone there.

For me, the biggest plus to Phil's school (outside of the fact that he's awesome) is that the school is located next to CHR's shop, which is equally awesome.

What other school has this combined level of awesomeness?

I would ask a local person, such as Cherrie from Cherrie Blossoms in Manchester, CO or BJ Dyer from Denver, at Bouquets for some local advice.
I am sure they are in one of the wire serivce directories or call directory assistance for #.

Also you could call Lynne Moss in PRatt, KS to discuss her views on educational opportunities around you, she is a past president of AIFD and reconized educator in the floral industry.

I trained at South Florida Center for Floral Studies under John Klingel AIFD in West Palm Beach Florida. He is excellent!! Nice area too. Here's his website....http://www.centerforfloralstudies.com

I would give my right arm to train under John again. Love him!!:bouquet2:

Yes, John Klingle is an outstanding teacher. I would consider his school also.

I have studied with many teachers throughout the country and there are several good ones. As a designer, I appreciate getting different perspectives from different teachers because they each have a little different method.

If you are only interested in one school.....I sure would call Phil first. I really should not comment on Palmer's because in all my years of designing, I have never known a designer that went there. They may be great....but, I am just saying that I know the work of several other teachers and their name has never come up. Eddie Payne is right....check with B.J. Dyer, or Lou Lynn Moss and find out their opinion.
