I so dislike dish gardens, but people still order them and they are profitable. I make my own up in all different kinds of ceramic containers.
Adding birch branches, curly willow, fresh flowers and all the B's (birds, butterflies, bugs, bows) to get them looking different.
If I have a 6" grapevine heart, I'll insert that if it has an ivy plant and wrap the ivy around the heart to add another dimension.

Any new ideas out there, because I think Dish Gardens are here to stay.

One of my favorite 'dish garden' designs is to take a large strawberry pot (the one that has the little pockets on the sides) and plant them up using a variety of grasses.

Looks so cool and since most grasses grow rather rapidly........doesn't take that long to get established.

Now, for some cool dish garden/container plant ideas.........go to www.aifd.org, look under symposium dvd's and get the one that Ralph Null did.

We've been doing them in glass, ala low terrarium look. There's another thread on here somewhere where this was discussed not too long ago.

I used to dress them up (when going to funerals) with oasis and a floral arrangement. They were generally very popular and an easy sell.

As V said - adding oasis and florals - We used to do the same thing with larger scale dish gardens, although we used a different water source. - We took the inexpensive off-brand plastic cemetery cone containers........extended the stake end with wood picks..........filled the container with oasis........and inserted that into the garden and added flowers from there.

Tall and more importantly - slender.............it blended in quite wonderfully with the garden......and let the flowers showcase themselves.
