Dear People,

There's going to be a memorial soon for a wonderful friend who was an ardent trade unionist and longtime member of the Carpenters Brotherhood. I was hoping to send a sympathy arrangement that would be a set piece/the symbol of the Carpenters. I've seen these for Rotarians and Masons.

Do you all know if florists still make these kinds of arrangements, and if so if one could be made to resemble the Carpenters' insignia or some recognizable part of it?

Thanks for any help you can offer. Memorial is in San Francisco.

All good wishes,
Julie

Not sure of your budget considerations, but after seeing the emblem and the amount of detailing........I am not sure if a floral representation of that image could be done and maintain the detailing.

With that image, I am fairly sure it would be a large scale design and I am hazarding a guess that such a peice would be well over 700.00 retail conservative estimate.

As far as a shop who would be willing to take on the challenge......I have no clue there.

What I might suggest as an alternative is this......Whichever shop in the San Francisco area is selected......work with them on getting the image mounted on a background of foamcore/plywood and mount that image into a design if complementing colors.

Yes they certainly do! It may not be quite as detailed as your photo, but you should be able to find a shop who can make this. I'd suggest calling funeral homes in the area of your memorial, and ask them for referrals for a custom floral insignia piece. I know our funeral home has referred us for these special pieces.

We've done playing cards bingo cards, poker chips (my, we're a degenerate bunch in NJ ;) ).... Maltese Cross for firefighters etc

Just be sure to get someone soon, to give enough time for them to plot out the piece. Good site to look at for some inspiration, and possibly costs, Moravian Florist in NY.

Julie -

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. His union emblem sounds like a wonderful tribute.

Florists sure do make set pieces, although they're not as common a request as they used to be, primarily due to budget.

Here are a few set piece examples recently posted on FC:
Motorcycle from RC
Dolphin from my shop
Treen from the UK also as an amazing collection of 'set piece type' images in the FC image gallery.

You really need an experienced designer to get one of good quality. In San Francisco, I'd start with Hoogasian or Rossi & Rovetti.

thank you!

Dear florist friends,

Thank you for all of this detailed and excellent help. So glad to hear that florists are still open to making these rather old-fashioned tributes. (I mean "old-fashioned" as high praise.)

This man was a mentor to me and many others. I can't attend the memorial but hope to send some beautiful flowers -- something really in contrast with the spartan way this person lived his life.

With gratitude and all good wishes,
Julie

If I was even close to the area where the funeral was I would be more than happy to do it. I rather like making carved shapes and noone ever asks for that anymore. Good luck in finding someone and do be prepared for a higher price tag.

That was my point - It isn't that we DON'T do them anymore - We do indeed - I still make them right regularly - from Gates Ajars to Bleeding hearts, from Trucks to guitars, from Masonic, Eastern Star, and Rebecca guilds to Sports and Racing emblems.

They are time-consuming and very labor intensive designs, Indeed, the budgetary concerns prevent a lot of us from doing them more than we do.

don't forget slot machines and "21's" lol

last week, a customer asked if I could make a teeny tiny cigarette out of flowers, for the deceased to hold. Now that's a new one for me. He changed his mind after taking some advice from other family members, who said to just have her old her favorite brand, in her old leather ciggy case.

I always tell them, whatever they do should be personal ! lol

It's interesting that you brought up the story of the cigarette - Before the shop I worked at was sold, the previous owner related to me about a design she had done way back in the late sixties/early seventies - Some friends of a deceased hippie wanted a mariuana cigarette made out of flowers - She said she did the design, but always regretted doing it.

Not up to the florist to judge, but to make the customers wish come true! No regret necessary. I can only think that the deceased would have enjoyed to effort of his friends to rest in peace! :scooter:
