I do believe this has been done before. I use the paper directories as needed. Some of our outlying areas don't have Merc. or Dove so the book is needed... also needed in a power failure. :)

Even if the florist does not have MercDuck :)) like that MercDuck) they are still in the system directory, and then that way the information is saved with the order, since you still have to select the florist...no need for the book...

As to the power failure, if we don;t have computers (no power), that means we do not have phones either...I suppose you could use a cell, but I preffer smoke signals myself:ned

:) Actually Mark, a land line or powerfail safe phone is at the ready at all times... past experience dictates that option for us.

And while I realize the florist is in the system, I do prefer to talk directly to the florist who is receiving the order... again, past experience has taught me that. Besides, the shop owner in that outlying place is phobic about computers and doesn't have one (there are still some of those folks around you know). She too prefers talking with the florist so I do as she does... she pays my bills.

Hope you had a glorious Thanksgiving!

We use it on the rare occasion when I need to look for deeper information on certain town. 99% it is done by computer. Also I am with Victoria, I do have a black dial phone that I can use to call and answer if the power failure happens. People calling in don't know if you had a power failure if they keep calling and no ones answers. THey may think you are closed or even out of business....

bEING A BIT OF A TECHNOPHOBE MYSELF i USE THE BOOK UNLESS IS incredibly busy. I really read the ads carefully to find the best match and have my own personal DO NOT USE list. Half the time when I load the directory update it brings down the system anyway- then I'm really in a fix.

printing it once or twice a year would be enough, imagine the cost!!!!
Yep, I concur...but for the very reason you mentioned...COST (to the members) they will continue as is, most likely forever...

Even considering the fact that my database is updated every 15 days, they still feel the need to print the paper copy for the ad revenues it generates...

I voted never.......but on second thought we have used it on occasion as a prop in the display area of the store, covered with a drape cloth it's just the right height for our window displays.

Other useful ideas for the directories might be.....

1/ shred them and use as blow in insulation

2/ put five or six in the back of the delivery van for extra weight in snow storms

3/ fitness program, for this you should put it on a shelf at least 3 feet above eye level and take it down to for every order you send or receive to verify florists code....(after verification be sure to put directory back)

4/ excellent source of heat during a power failure...should burn for at least 1 hour....(careful not to burn the store down!)

......dang must be a few more

I bet there's an ecological group out there that would love to get wind of this unnecessary use of our trees.
Unless the book is made totally from recycled goods...

Good idea...we'll make that your project for January...what do ya say?

this IS a pretty funny thread....

with pretty important implications.
For those of us that use the necessary technology, it eliminates the need for the paper directories, and for those that are "techno-phobic" THE BOOK, is like "letter writing"!!...some people STILL write letters you know.
Has anyone here actually laid ONE YEAR'S worth of directories on the floor, on top of each other, and MEASURED to height of the stack??...multiply THAT by THOUSANDS of florists...how many homes, or cottages could we build??
THAT would be an interesting project!
Also, all the wire services "claim" to be moving forward, with our best interests at heart...HOW ABOUT recieving the directory on a "subscription" basis...in other words...IF you SIGN UP, to get the paper directory, THEN you get it!! NOT wasting THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS on postage for shops that use these directories for door stops, or child seat risers.
I would suspect, that IF EVERYONE (like in EVERYBODY) who DIDN'T WANT directories kicked up a fuss, I mean REALLY raised a stink, and did it at the same time, we probably COULD change this....

conventions, confrences, and meetings with any district ftd/tele rep is the place to start!
They will not do anything, except give you lip service...remember any decrease in sales or fund gathering for the company cuts into thier take home pay...

The only way is for RealFlorists to gather, combine support, stand up and be counted, and become ONE VOICE!

The Book

Is the Hook that keeps one from getting out in a timely fashion.

A casual glance at the number of adds. in the directory is enought to confirm how difficult it is to effect change in the industry.
Any Florist suffering Ostioperossus(sp) should consider the book a health hazzard.
