Do new applicants need a better email address than hotmail, yahoo, or the generic email clients to apply for membership? I know that a bit ago admin didn't allow those email addresses as "viable".
I don't know the answer to your question but I think it is an important one. Even though I have a "brick and mortar" shop, I wasn't able to get on Flowerchat until I had my professional e-mail. I understood why then and I think even moreso now.

There are just too many people out there telling consumers they can do..(fill in the blank) cheaper than florists.
If having a professional e-mail keeps some of these people out, I say keep it up!
