Domain Names

That's like saying: "If I buy another phone line, more people will call me."

There are benefits to obtaining more domain names - IF - they are set up properly, and marketed properly. Simply owning another domain name does nothing.

First question should be: Am I doing all I can to market the domain name I have?

Second question: Do I have all the reasonably similar domains that someone might type or remember by accident?

Ryan I understand #1 and do attempt to do that. Although I don't know that we can ever do everything.
#2 That is my question. I'm looking at a name that I feel people searching would type in. As a domain name it isn't taken, so I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to buy it and have it go to our current domain.

If you are trying to capture type-in traffic, that's a good reason to get the domain. It's only $7 / year for a domain name, so it can be worth trying.

Make sure you use a 301 redirect to your main domain.

It's the difference between "back in 5 minutes" and "we've moved, visit our new location."

When you register the domain you'll have the option to implement the forwarding. Some registrars don't ask (run!) but our domain control panel will ask you if you want to use a 302 (temporary) or 301 (permanent) redirect. Use a 301.

Great points Ryan.

What I did was spit our business in two websites - everyday flowers and weddings and events. Each site has different markets, keywords to target that market and each site links to each other.

I am not sure if that is smart and if Google's Spider Algorithm picks up on it. :)

Speaking of my websites.. omg they are awful.

It's like the mechanic's car never gets fixed and the carpenter needs to dry wall half his house still.

Best plan would likely be to have all content on one domain:

www.brandonsflowers.com For everyday stuff

www.brandonsweddings.com with a 301 to www.brandonsflowers.com/weddings

You can still have a completely different look and feel to the /weddings pages, but this consolidates your link juice for the whole domain, helping everything rank better.

I hear that ... :(
