This is an old scam, but seems to be resurrected lately. A number of our clients have been reporting emails like this one:

Dear CEO,

Sorry to trouble you! We are a professional internet consultant organization
in Asia, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your
company. On July.29 2009, we received an application formally, one company
named "Haggle Holdings Ltd." applied for the brand keyword
"acme" and following domain names:
acme.asia
acme.cc
acme.com.cn
acme.com.hk
acme.com.tw
acme.in
acme.net.cn
with our organization.

During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names'
keyword is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned
Haggle Holdings Ltd. to register these domain names with us? Or is Haggle
Holdings Ltd. your business partner or distributor in Asia?

Currently, we have already postponed this application of this company
temporarily. Therefore please let the relevant person make a confirmation
with me by telephone or email ASAP.

Best Regards,
Aviva
The domain seller is lying to create a sense of urgency and force the business owner into making a quick decision to buy over-priced domains.

While it's a very good strategy to own all domain variations of your business name across the major TLDs, you should make it a considered decision and purchase from a reputable and affordable provider.

www.godaddy.com - The most popular domain registrar
www.domainsbystrider.com - Strider (that's us) is a tad cheaper than GoDaddy and backed by the same company as GoDaddy
www.networksolutions.com - Another popular one, but ridiculously over-priced - almost 8x more than Strider or GoDaddy

As always Ryan thanks for the heads up on the latest Web News.

I do own all my logical variations.

I wonder are people really that gullable....

YES, people CAN be that gullible.
