Usually I do the ribbon-pouf method, makes a nice light pomander. But a bride wants a solid mass of carns and I don't want a heavy wet oasis ball.

I can get some white styrofoam balls from the wholesaler and glue the carns on... has anyone else done this method? Thanks.

Yes and Yes.. Learned a few tricks while moonlighting
with Preston Bailey...

Spray paint those balls the same color as the flowers.. and no glue - pin the flowers in... goes faster and less weight.

Happy day.. Finally something I actually knew about! WHEW!:>

Thanks guys. I was planning to use glue but never tried the toothpick thing. Sounds super fun! /sarcasm

May have to try it though. Can't see any other way without them being obnoxiously heavy.

Tammie: I would worry, not using glue. But maybe just maybe Preston knows what he's doing. lol

Viv: are you saying you pierce the carn, like jam it in from the top? That sounds like it would look cool but could get expensive!

Of course we don't want you to worry - so maybe.. just a little glue - Whatever makes you happy, makes me happy! :>

Preston knowing what he was doing.. HHMM.. I'd have to say... Yes!
(for the most part) - he has 'lots of "personal" assistants.
The one time I worked for him in Fort Worth I actually did give him some advise... and believe it or not - he took it.

Yep pierced it right through from the top. we can get plastic diamante (that actually sounds tacky and naff) that look really nice and cost us about 20p a pin think that equates to about 12cents for you so they aren't so very expensie to use. Guess it would be mor eif you used glass headed pins but it worked really well and they have been very popular especially in green carns, white ones and pink ones too. Love my wedding work did one today in white carns with black diamante pins for a black and white themed wedding.

Well, all I can add is I'm glad you guys GET to use carns!

I'm so tired of flower snobs!

GREAT advice in this thread!

Do many of you use poms for these too? I have a wedding in Aug. that to cut cost I'm using poms, spraying the color of orange and pink I need. Plus carns will be heavy to hang where needed.
Tell me more about using toothpicks. Rather, how to's.

We have a wedding coming up and they want hot pink pomanders and of course wants them inexpensive, great idea using the white foam and painting it first then using pins. Wonder how expensive the carns would be, it would take quite a few minis, they want it small.

Ok I did it and what I did was paint the styrofoam the color of the carns (pink). I used the toothpicks and glued them on. It was labor-intensive but I felt that they were more secure than just gluing or just pinning. In case anyone wants to know, a 6" styrofoam ball takes about 60 carnations to fill up.

Tips:

- Cut the stem off all the way to the top but not too far up or it makes the flower fall apart. If you leave any stem on though, it makes it harder to stick the toothpick in.

- Use the bigger toothpicks not the regular ones

- I used cold glue till I ran out then (horrors!) had to use hot glue, I just used it at a very low temp

- I just glued the ribbon in with a cowee pick, reinforced w/real wire, don't rely on that super thin wire attached to the pick.

- Didn't go "through" the ball, I think that would be physically impossible w/the hard styrofoam. If you needed a tail you could just glue one in. These were hung on shepherds hooks at the ceremony, then transported to sit on top of pilsners at the reception.

I got the photographers card and am hoping to get some better pics of these and the rest of the flowers, I just don't take great pictures.

ps the bride loved it all.

Poms work great too... I would pin them in with poms - toothpicks may be a little too big.

All you need is a regular head pin - the all silver kind - not a corsage pin. Cut the stem of the pom flush to the bottom of the bloom, put the pin in thru the top of the pomand push into the pre-spraypainted styro.

Voila! Your good to go - really -- you don't need glue - try it first so you aren't nervous about no glue.. (but I never use glue on these) :loopy

We usually use the small size shower scrubbies (poofs?). We get them at target or dollar stores. You must use the mini ones. The handle is already attached and then we just hot glue the flowers or flowers and greens to that. You can spray the scrubby first, the color or the flowers or the greens.

We learned this trick from a freelancer. If you need to attach a ribbon you can knot the handle very close to the poof and tie the ribbon to the shortened braided handle.

This works especially well for young flower girls. They can really swing em around.
