Looks like FTD has put all their eggs in one basket, and when the basket breaks......:FTDme

FTD has a massive hunk of antique hardware in Downers Grove and it seems that everything form florist to florist orders, dot.com orders, we site orders, DOG's orders and more go though there.

They can have all the backup equipment they want but what would happen if a national disaster such as Katrina, or the Ice Storm of 1997 in Eastern Canada / US were to hit the Chicago area?????

It's going to cost FTD a bundle now but they are going to have to set up a different system with pods in several areas so that if a problem occurs in one area orders can be automatically be rerouted through another pod and continue on it's merry way to the final destination (the recipient). Phone companies have systems like that in place.......when a major phone line goes down all long distance calls are redirected, it may slow things down a little but it usually doesn't kill the system and if enough pods are used it would only effect a small section of the landscape.

It only makes common sense, when we order flowers for a major holiday most of us don't order everything from one supplier to all come in on the day before (I sure don't). FTD did and now it's really going to cost them big $$$ to fix along with a loss in unhappy members that will likely resign after this episode......not to mention the ton of customers that will not trust the floral industry any more.....Not just FTD but all flower vendors will suffer because all FTD's eggs were in one basket.
:soapbox:

Sorry folks, but FTD will not change/fix anything, all the money is going to the top 5-6 in the office's and there are no plans to upgrade anything, unless you consider Windows a stable platform ;)

BBJ - great points!

Pure speculation here, but I'm guessing FTD didn't want to fork out the $$$ needed to do it right. Infrastructure investments aren't sexy and aren't well-received by share holders since they reduce profits in the short term.

Leonard Green's focus has really only been short-term since they just wanted boost share prices and sell for a handy profit - leaving the long-term issues for new owners. They probably thought they'd have sold the company by now and have done everything possible to try and 'pretty it up'. (I just keep laughing about the 'lipstick on a pig' quote from TheStreet.com.)

They rolled the dice and came up snake eyes this V-Day.

well, bbj, your post would make sense to normal people, but you really don't understand the tech world very well. It's ironic how your post almost 100% accurately describes my current working situation...

I have been contracted by a very large auto insurance "clearinghouse" that supports over 10,000 "agents" in many states (hmmm...sounds vaguely familiar, no?). Tech decisions made 10 years ago are now biting them in the you-know-where, and they are scrambling to keep the servers up on a daily basis.

It's almost laughable...I swear it would make the funniest commercial what I see everyday..."the servers are up!!! the servers are down!!! the servers are up!!! the servers are locked out! reboot reboot...cant reboot" etc etc. Of course they are using Windows and a language that was designed as a RAD GUI desktop tool, NOT a high-performance scalable web one. My OS shopping cart probably had more functionality, scalability, stability and admin options then there entire system has, and we are talking about a 14 year effort with 4-5 full time programmers.

Anyway, the cost to upgrade this "system" would be staggering and the potential downtime impossible to manage, so they continue on and on....believe it or not Linux may still save their sorry Win boxes...we (some Accenture guys and I) are implementing VMWare to "virtualize" the crappy, unreliable Win servers to allow them to run within a linux VM, making them oh about 10x more stable easier to manage.

Back to the point, the only reason this upgrade is occurring is because this company was recently bought out by a national biggie...so without a big change in ownership, do not expect any change in the IT at FTD...remember, its job security for that existing team...

LOL.... VMWare along with Wine was standard on Advantage boxes since they went to Linux... but alas their collective wisdom was to dump Linux...

Go figure!

Yeah...its the same thing here...and, probably at at some level, understandable. We are talking about people careers and job security here, not stuff to be taken lightly at any time. When I ever dare to mention the word "Ubuntu" you should see the look of pure terror that crosses the faces...

Also, WINE just isn't reliable enough as a MS Win desktop emulator, so I don't blame them for dumping that particular solution. They should have just rewritten the app, but then we are back to square one with debugging deployment etc etc...

FTD Val Days Fiasco

To date have spoken to over 70 florists that could not get orders through to us and several hundred coast to coast that sufferred greatly.

FTD claims to be making changes to prevent another incident.
That would cost money and the money would wind up coming from members in the end.

Sorry does not cover the losses the shops incurred and we feel for the smaller shops that took a severe beating.
We will survive, but will never make the same mistakes again.
WS beware............... collecting monies can have it's drawbacks when there is no return on ones monthly investment, especislly when it is undermined at every turn ! Rumour has it that a group has formed and has received the interest of a very powerful National Law Firm that feels that they can build a bulletproof class action suit.
Stay tuned. We will !

Advantage users Got Scrwed again...
they where still selling upgrades when I left. But they are not going to do muck with it...
DO I here sue???
HHHmmm :hammer:

Judging by how these window guys did the new high speed connections stuff I should hope they would not 'muck with" Advantage.. I had no problems that I know about (yet) so please please do not 'muck up' something that is working well.

I agree I don't understand tech very well.........I was just saying what needs to be done, the tech part is somebody elses problem...:dunno:

Yes data redundancy should be a top priority for any med. to large web hosting system, but the capital expenditure to make it happen is very very large and not something execs really want to deal with. Liie CHR so insightfully put it, it adds very little to the bottom line short term, and since the owners at FTD are looking to flip-the-burger, I would be quite surprised to see them move in that direction anytime soon.
