Scientists are having some success in eliminating bad memories from humans.

Here's the question...

If this comes to fruiition, would you choose to have the procedure? Of course please include the reasons behind your answer.

Wow this is a complicated one V for me. There are most certainly some memories that i would like to get rid of but then the bad experiences in life can help you become a stronger person. I know mine have.

Jury still out, will have to think about this one...

I would not have the procedure done but I personally know a few people (served in Irag) who would really benefit from this type of procedure as moving on with all the ugliness in the heads seems next to impossible for them. I keep praying that they will find strength in what they have been through but the memories continue to haunt them to the point of being debilitating.

All the bad experiences in my life have shaped me into the person I am and am not today. I wouldn't live through them a second time but I certainly wouldn't erase them.

I remember being 4 tears old pulling a birds nest down out of a tree full of babies. I hid them in the bushes and tried to feed them cereal. They lasted one day.

I would have that one removed.

Why?
Because I will probably come back as a bird.

This question is difficult for the reasons mentioned. I am who I am today because of the experiences, good and bad, of my life. I am truly stronger because of the valleys which had to be crossed and the mountains that had to be climbed.

One memory, and almost noone knows this, is that as a child I was molested by an uncle. He has, since that time, become a Christian who has done many good and worthwhile things with his life. I would like to erase that memory and be able to be around him without that memory popping up and interferring with my ability to forgive and forget.

We all have bad memories and I can live with mine - because my bad memories are not devastating memories.

But I am confident that there are many people who relive a horrific memory over and over and I have to believe that for these people, life would be a bit happier if we could simply erase that experience.

There are enough opportunities -good and bad- to shape our being without having to be shaped by a horrible memory...JMHO

Personally, no, though I do have some terrible memories. Their images & feelings make me me, good and bad twisted into one.

I could never answer for another, nor would I presume their answer to be right or wrong, for all of the very same reasons - maybe their "me" could be bettered tremendously by having those images erased.

I don't have the conviction that I would be improved by deleting some of my history, which would have been the only reason for me to say yes.

good question.

Bless your forgiving heart Connie - you are brave & earnest in your faith. :ghug:

this is exactly what electroshock therepy used for years was supposed to do. i think the problem is that is erased more memories than just the bad. had an aunt that had it 20 years ago and said it worked for her. they used to experiment a lot on " crazy" people with it. popularity is back using this treatment with successful cases.

I use the beer method of erasing the day's bad memories.

If you do enough of that then many brain cells will be lost, so who needs science!

Actually, I would not choose to eradicate any memories. I have been forged from both good and bad. It's a matter of personal commitment and strength to not be ruled by the bad stuff (and believe me, there has been some pretty awful stuff). I have learned from every experience and have emerged on the light side of the dark... I'm very okay with that.

Have you seen Robin William's movie "The Final Cut"? Are there memories you would want cut if this technology were true from your friends and family to see at your funeral? I surely would.

Well when put that way, Thom, then yes as there are incidents that have occurred in my life that surely would hurt my parents.

Most of the bad stuff fades over time--but there are a few that need a little help. The problem is that a lot of the bad memories are connected to some good ones.

As I understand it, this therapy is for really traumatic memories like war, etc. that plagues people for years. Those, I would get rid of.

I always thought I would, but then I watched the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with Jim Carey and Kate Winslet...It completely changed my mind! In the movie, they each have their memories of the other erased, but it also erases all the memories that have anything to do with that time. Basically, a lot of good memories go away too. So much of who I am has been shaped by things I have seen and done (both good and bad). Ill keep the whole sorted mess, thanks!

Thought provoking thread V!!!!!

If you have not seen that movie, I highly recommend it, it's wonderful!!!!!

I voted no - for the simple fact that all my memories, both good and bad, all contribute to the collection of chemicals, energy, body, soul, mind, and spirit of a singlular, unique, individual named Ricky W. King AIFD, SCCPF, NCCPF.

All of them will help me to be able to answer a question if asked of me.......I am on my deathbed......someone asks " Before you go, Is there anything different you would like change or do over?".......and my answer be " NO !!! I had the best life anyone could have? "

I could think of one thing I would change if asked the Deathbed question... "I'd like to change being on my deathbed". ;)
